Soc Trang harvested over 36,200 ha

For the summer-autumn 2024 season, Soc Trang has planted over 140,400 ha. As of now, over 36,200 ha have been harvested, primarily in My Tu, Thanh Tri, Chau Thanh, Ke Sach, Nga Nam, and Soc Trang city.

The average yield for the summer-autumn 2024 rice season is estimated at 55.3 quintals/ha, with a total production of 200,639 tons. Main rice varieties include OM5451, OM18, OM34, Dai Thom 8, and ST.

Recently, continuous rain and high humidity have led to pest issues. Statistics from the Soc Trang Department of Agriculture indicate over 12,500 ha affected by pests, including leaf blight, neck rot, grain discolouration, leaf burning, and stem rot.

In the Long Phu district, farmers started the summer-autumn 2024 crop about two weeks later than last year. The delay was due to the 2023/24 dry season, which affected saltwater intrusion and the late onset of rain. Farmers had to wait for enough fresh water to wash out the salinity before planting, affecting progress.

Salinity and alkalinity issues have caused over 500 hectares of summer-autumn rice in the district to be replanted. Currently, the rice is mainly in the heading and flowering stages.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that from August to October 2024, rainfall will be 5-15% higher than the average for this period. There is a potential for storms and tropical depressions to cause heavy rain, flooding, and rice lodging, especially during the heading stage.

Frequent rainfall and storms present significant challenges for Soc Trang farmers in implementing alternating wet-dry irrigation (AWD), impacting yield and quality.
