Other localities are purchasing pigs at levels around VND 65,000 - 66,000/kg.

In the first seven months of 2024, Vietnam imported over 450,000 tons of meat and animal by-products for food, an increase of 6.4% compared to the same period in 2023.
Notably, the amount of meat products accounted for over 320,000 tons, an increase of more than 40%. These numbers indicate that the demand for imported meat in Vietnam remains very high, despite the domestic livestock industry facing many challenges.
However, the prominent issue is not only the quantity but also the quality of imported meat products. According to data from the Animal Health Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), since Circular No. 04/2024/TT-BNNPTNT took effect on May 16, 2024, a total of 55 shipments tested positive for Salmonella out of 6,679 shipments tested, accounting for nearly 1%.
Thus, if Salmonella testing is not conducted, a large quantity of over 1,300 tons of contaminated animal meat could be imported into Vietnam, posing a very high risk of outbreaks, compromising food safety, and affecting the health of Vietnamese consumers.
