US: 1st detection of H5N1 avian influenza in pigs
On October 30, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed that a pig on a farm in Oregon tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza, marking the first time the country has reported an outbreak in pigs.
The spread of avian influenza in pigs is now a major concern. The USDA stated that the supply of pork in the U.S. is not affected by the case of avian influenza in Oregon, and the risk of community spread remains low.
The farm where the avian influenza was detected in Oregon has been quarantined, and other animals there are being monitored for illness.
