High-tech agriculture in Ninh Thuan: Transform scorching heat into advantage

(VAN) Identifying high-tech agriculture as the 'lifeline' of harsh weather regions, Ninh Thuan province is determined to scale up proven effective models.

Take advantage of the opportunity

In anticipation of a market that is becoming more receptive to Vietnamese agricultural products, numerous production models that employ advanced technology and environmentally sustainable organic farming methods have generated substantial commodity value and lucrative incomes. The agricultural sector in Vietnam has seen a significant improvement in production and commercial capability. Vietnamese agricultural products have been gaining recognition in the global market and are now available in over 185 countries and territories.

In addition, Vietnam has ratified 16 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) other significant trade accords, which provide extensive opportunities for Vietnamese products to access various global markets. Simultaneously, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is based on the integration of technology and digitization, offers a chance to expedite the reorganization of the agricultural industry, particularly in advanced agriculture involving the large-scale production of commodities.

In the near future, Ninh Thuan will enhance and restructure production through interconnected chains, with businesses playing a central role in these connections. It will encourage farmers, farms, and cooperatives in the region to adopt advanced technology in production. Technology will be employed in production management to achieve source traceability, ensure food safety, establish brands, and expand markets.

The emergence of high-tech agriculture and the digital transformation in agriculture are recognized as the primary and unavoidable trends in the process of integration. It is a highly efficient way for reorganizing the agriculture industry. Mr. Dang Kim Cuong, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Thuan, stated that our focus is on promoting innovation by involving businesses. We achieve this by creating and enforcing strategies and regulations that motivate businesses to invest in research and development, utilize scientific advancements and technology to improve production and business operations, and establish and grow their brands.

Mr. Cuong contends that the severe climatic circumstances, characterized by perpetual heat, confer an advantageous position for the advancement of Ninh Thuan's agricultural towards high technology. Ninh Thuan is a region that offers numerous transportation benefits for facilitating the distribution of goods, as well as the reception and transmission of sophisticated scientific and technical innovations, and the development of human resources.I

n particular, two small-scale initiatives focused on improving irrigation and internal transportation for high-tech agriculture in Ninh Thuan, namely the Thanh Son - Phuoc Nhon and Nhon Hai - Thanh Hai transportation routes, as well as the Tan My, Song Cai, Song Than, Kien Kien irrigation systems, which are interconnected reservoir projects, will be finalized and operationalized between 2021 and 2025. These projects aim to address the issue of water scarcity for irrigation purposes. "This presents a favorable prospect for the agricultural industry in Ninh Thuan to flourish," elucidated Mr. Dang Kim Cuong, the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Thuan.

Infrastructure investment

In order to accomplish the goals mentioned above, Ninh Thuan is currently focusing its resources and attracting investment to construct infrastructure for high-tech agricultural areas. This involves integrating the planning of high-tech agricultural zones into the province's socio-economic development plan, in accordance with practical requirements and the sector's development direction.

Ninh Thuan plans to create one to two high-tech agricultural zones in each district. Additionally, it will identify three to five areas with favorable conditions for the development of specific products and initiate infrastructure investment projects in those areas. Investors in high-tech agricultural zones will receive the most favorable incentives, including benefits related to land, construction of production facilities, services, and other incentives specified by the province.

The key crops identified for prioritized development in Ninh Thuan's high-tech agriculture roadmap include the primary and specialty crops specific to the region, such as grapes, apples, garlic, asparagus, aloe vera, as well as certain market-driven crops like onions, garlic, tomatoes, cucumbers, pears, squash, flowers, and green-skinned pomelos.

The primary livestock species specified in Ninh Thuan's high-tech agriculture development roadmap include cattle, goats, sheep, and poultry. In relation to pig farming, Ninh Thuan will exclusively promote the establishment of farms that adhere to the province's standards concerning capacity. Furthermore, there will be a restriction on the proportion of pork production, ensuring that it does not exceed 65% of the overall animal meat production in the province. Ninh Thuan gives high priority to livestock facilities that utilize automated control technology for breeding, waste treatment, water recycling, advanced microbial technology, and microbial products that exceed international standards.

Ninh Thuan focuses on white leg shrimp, vannamei shrimp, and marine fish in the fisheries industry. The province gives importance to automated control technology for environmental management and animal care, as well as synthetic biology technology, next-generation microbial technology, microbial products that meet international standards, and deep-sea aquaculture technology.

In the coming years, Ninh Thuan will prioritize the study and implementation of hybrid advantages to develop distinctive crop varieties that have the potential to dominate the market. These varieties will possess superior traits that are well-suited to the province's ecological and soil circumstances. Some examples of these include different types of grapes, apples, asparagus, cucumbers, onions, and garlic. Concurrently, Ninh Thuan will enhance the quality of indigenous cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs. The focus will be on doing research and producing parent shrimp stocks, various marine fish species, and other specialty seafood variations.
