On April 24, Nestlé Vietnam coordinated with the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) and representatives of Ministries and branches to organize a discussion on orientation, roadmap, legal regulations on inventory, and initiatives to reduce emissions throughout the supply chain, contributing to the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
The event is within the framework of cooperation between Nestlé Vietnam, the Co-Chairman of VBCSD, and strategic partners, contributing to the country's common goal of responding to climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for future generations.
This activity is especially meaningful when it is time for businesses to carry out appraisals of inventory reports and greenhouse gas emission mitigation plans according to Decree No. 06/2022/ND-CP and other related regulations.
More than 140 representatives from leading supply, transportation, and logistics businesses in Vietnam who are partners of Nestlé Vietnam jointly participated in discussions and shared with VBCSD representatives, experts from the Department of Climate Change (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment), the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the Science-Technology and Environment Department (Ministry of Transport), and technical consulting units.
According to a quick survey, the majority of businesses in the supply chain knew and wished to develop action programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, many businesses still face difficulties and confusion in measuring, inventorying, and building a roadmap to achieve emissions reduction targets.
Therefore, the exchange and discussion program not only aims to update Vietnam's international commitments and provide information on the relevant legal framework but also guides businesses in the supply chain to implement inventory reports as well as develop and perfect an emission reduction plan with the goal of contributing to realizing Vietnam's Net Zero commitment by 2050.
Mr. Luong Quang Huy, Head of the Department of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Ozone Layer Protection, Department of Climate Change, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, believes that Nestlé Vietnam's companionship with VBCSD in organizing meaningful dialogue programs will be a bridge for state management agencies and businesses to jointly share about international trends in the green transition process, legal regulations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and technology and management processes related to reducing emissions and responding to climate change.
In addition, this activity is an opportunity to strengthen the coordination of relevant units in the process of perfecting legal policies, promoting activities to respond to and mitigate climate change, and providing the best support for the sustainable development of businesses.
Mr. Pham Hoang Hai, Head of Partnership Relations, Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development, expressed that in recent years, Nestlé Vietnam and VBCSD have implemented many meaningful and valuable cooperation, exchange, and dialogue programs.
VBCSD recognizes and highly appreciates the activities and initiatives of Nestlé Vietnam as Co-Chairman of VBCSD in the strategy to respond to climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to the common goal of the country.
This event is also a good opportunity for VBCSD to continue sharing and disseminating to the business community information and current market requirements on reducing emissions in the supply chain on the basis of mutual exchange and the promotion of general cooperation.
Listening to the sharings, Mr. Khuat Quang Hung, Director of External Relations and Communications at Nestlé Vietnam, said that since Nestlé Group announced the Nestlé Net Zero Roadmap in 2020, the Group has transformed business operations and begun implementing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all three scopes of Nestlé's operations.
“We apply two main strategic approaches to help tackle Scope 3 emissions. The strategy 'Nestlé Forest Positive' aims to conserve and restore forests and natural habitats, and the 'Nestlé Agriculture Framework' aims to implement a more regenerative agricultural and food system. Besides, we are implementing initiatives and solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in transportation and logistics activities," Mr. Khuat Quang Hung shared about Nestlé's orientation.
In Vietnam, Nestlé is a pioneer with strong actions in promoting the implementation of models of circular economy and regenerative agriculture with innovation and digital transformation in an effort towards a green economy with sustainable development.
In 2023, Nestlé Vietnam and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening public-private cooperation to promote the development of sustainable agriculture and regenerative and low-emission agriculture through the Partnership for Sustainable Agriculture in Vietnam (PSAV) program. At the same time, the two sides officially launched an agroforestry initiative to plant 2.3 million trees in the Central Highlands.
Besides, reducing emissions and investing in digital transformation in the field of transportation and logistics are among the important strategies of Nestlé Vietnam. Typical initiatives include the smart application "Cargoo," which connects manufacturers with importers and carriers, contributing to increasing packing efficiency and reducing sea transport charges since 2022; and the "Transportation-Hubsmart" smart application in warehouse and transportation management, which helps optimize order allocation and reduce emissions in transportation activities.
Established in 1995, Nestlé always respects the principles of sustainable development in production and business activities associated with the implementation of social responsibility.
2023 is also the year that marks the milestone of Nestlé Vietnam leading the Top 100 "Sustainable Enterprises of the Year" in the manufacturing sector for three consecutive years, according to results announced by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) within the framework of the Sustainable Business Assessment and Announcement Program in Vietnam.
