Floods in the Mekong Delta will be different now

Moderate rain, heavy to very heavy rain for the area

During the peak rainy season in July - August - September, the developments are as follows: in July, the southwest monsoon is strongly active, and there will be many widespread rains with moderate rain, heavy to very heavy rain in some places, and prolonged rain. lasting for many days. Beware of the possibility of thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds during thunderstorms.

From mid to late August, there will likely be a decrease in rain during the rainy season. In September, several southwest solid winds are causing widespread rain, with moderate rain and heavy to hefty rain lasting a few days.

Although storms and tropical depressions are predicted to appear a lot this year, they are unlikely to affect the Southern sea or land area directly.

However, these patterns will cause southwest solid winds, leading to widespread thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain. Be wary of thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, and gusts of strong winds. At the same time, pay attention to southwest solid monsoons causing dangerous weather at sea.

Whether rain caused by storms or tropical depressions will help increase the amount of water in the Mekong River is difficult to determine. Naturally, when there is a lot of rain, there is a lot of water, but the current flow of the Mekong River is no longer natural and depends on the countries' regulations along the stream.

Floods will be higher than average for many years

According to Mr. Quyet, in the past two months, the water level at stations on the mainstream of the Mekong River has increased rapidly. The water level at Kratie station is approximately the same as in 2023 and lower than the average for many years. The total flow through Kratie station in April and May was about 1.2% larger than last year but about 11% lower than the average of many years.

In the Mekong River watershed, water levels at Tan Chau and Chau Doc stations began to increase slowly from May. Most stations in the inland area of Long Xuyen Quadrangle and Dong Thap Muoi, region were higher than in the same period of last year and higher than the average for many years. In the next three months, water levels will rise rapidly at stations in the Mekong River upstream, Dong Thap Muoi inland, and Long Xuyen Quadrangle.

In October, floods in the Mekong River watershed will likely peak and gradually subside. From mid-November to the end of December, the water level at the stations will drop rapidly and change to tidal mode.

According to forecasts, the southwest monsoon will maintain activity in the Southern Sea in October. The wind intensity will gradually weaken and switch to the northeast monsoon around the beginning of November. At this time, the wind can cause higher tides, causing flooding in the interior of the field.

In addition, during this period, when there is a storm or tropical depression combined with cold air from the North, it will cause strong winds, big waves, and water surges in the waters of Ba Ria - Vung Tau to Ca Mau. Strong seas pose a danger to ships and marine and coastal structures.

The effects of storms are also risky

Kien Giang Provincial Hydrometeorological Station has a report assessing the natural disaster situation and identifying natural disaster trends until the end of 2024: heavy rain is forecast to appear many years later than average.

Note that there will be widespread heavy rains causing local flooding in some low-lying and urban areas in Rach Gia and Phu Quoc.

In addition, it is necessary to take precautions against strong winds and large waves at sea due to the influence of distant circulation from storms, tropical depressions, and southwest solid monsoons that disrupt ship operations. It is necessary to prevent high water levels due to strong winds combined with high tides, causing flooding in the downstream areas of Cai Lon and Cai Be rivers, Can Gao - Xeo Ro canal and An Bien and An Minh coastal areas.

Mr. Truong Hoang Giang - director of the Hydrometeorological Station of Vinh Long province - commented that the upcoming situation will likely impact the environment, living conditions, infrastructure, and socio-economic activities.

Thunderstorms, lightning, whirlwinds, hail, strong winds, and heavy rain negatively affect agricultural production activities and people's lives, posing many dangers to human life and property.
