Robusta coffee price movement
In today’s trading session, Robusta coffee prices on the London exchange continued to record a sharp decline. Specifically, the May 2025 contract dropped by $ 316/ton to $ 4,796/ton, equivalent to a decrease of 6.18%. Similarly, the July 2025 contract also fell by $ 328/ton to $ 4,800/ton, marking a 6.4% drop.
Arabica coffee price movement
On the New York exchange, Arabica coffee prices fared no better. The May 2025 contract dropped by 25.5 cents/pound to 340.2 cents/pound, equivalent to a 7.97% decrease. The July 2025 contract also fell by 25.85 cents/pound, settling at 337.45 cents/pound.
Reasons for the price decline
The price drop is mainly driven by concerns over a global economic recession, especially as the U.S. government continues to impose high tariffs on imported goods. Vietnam, facing a tariff rate as high as 46%, is encountering significant difficulties in competing with other coffee-producing countries such as Brazil and Colombia, where the respective tariffs are much lower (10% and 32%).
According to experts, coffee production in Brazil is also being affected by unfavourable weather conditions, which has led to a downward revision in its coffee output forecast. This could cause significant volatility in global coffee prices in the near future.
