Forum "Identifying the current situation of linking consumption and export of durian 2023 and solutions for effective and sustainable development of Vietnam's durian industry” will be held on the morning of September 11, 2023 in Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak province.
After China officially approved official imports, Vietnam's durian industry has developed strongly with export turnover in 2023 expected to reach over $ 1.5 billion.
However, currently the phenomena of buying and selling, price fluctuations, breaking stakes, abandoning contracts, breaking chain links... are taking place in durian growing areas, especially the Central Highlands region. This leads to violations of state regulations on growing area codes, packaging facilities, food safety as well as export standards. If this continues, there is a high risk that it will reduce the reputation, quality, and brand of Vietnamese durian products in the world market.
Carrying out the tasks and directions of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper - Leader of the Agricultural Product Connection Forum 970 in collaboration with Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Dak Lak Durian Association organized the Forum "Identifying the current situation of linking durian consumption and export in 2023 and solutions for effective and sustainable development of Vietnam's durian industry".

“Regarding the expectation of Minister Le Minh Hoan, the agricultural industry must change its mindset to create agricultural products that meet the needs of the market, or in other words, the industry needs to produce according to the signal of the market, avoid production following habit. To achieve that, durian producers must understand the tastes of Chinese consumers”, the Deputy Director of the SPS Vietnam Office opened up in the meeting with Vietnam Agriculture News.
Through business trips in your country as well as surveying durian growing areas and packing facilities, Mr. Nam found that Chinese consumers often prefer to buy durian boxes, instead of buying individual fruits.
Before the harvest, the packaging specifications in durian boxes were transferred and handed over to the Vietnamese side by importers and distributors in China. The duties of the packing facilities, in addition to the phytosanitary treatment, to ensure that the packaging and labelling are as in the protocol, is to place the finished durian in a container and then refrigerate it at the right temperature.
According to Mr. Nam, ordinary consumers in China tend to buy durian boxes with 6 fruits inside, with a weight ranging from 18-20kg. On average, the finished durian needs to reach an average weight of 3-3.5kg.
To bring durian deeper into the Chinese market and reach more Chinese customers, Mr. Nam recommends that gardeners pay attention to the uniformity of finished products when harvesting, and how to "fit 6 fruits in a 20kg box".
