On the afternoon of August 29, the People's Committee of Cu M'gar district (Dak Lak) held a ceremony to announce the Cu M'gar district durian brand combined with the launch of the mobile application "Cu M'gar district information".
Mr Vu Hong Nhat, Chairman of the People's Committee of Cu M'gar district, said that the locality has an area of over 4,500 ha of durian. In particular, the People's Committee of Cu M'gar district has planned a concentrated planting area in the Ea Tar commune and neighbouring communes with an area of over 1,000 ha. In 2023, the district has over 1,000 ha serving businesses, and the output is estimated at over 20,000 tons.

According to Mr Nhat, it is forecasted that in the coming time, the area and output of durian in the district will lead the whole province. To ensure the interests and increase efficiency and value for durian producers and traders in the district, The District People's Committee has registered to protect the collective trademark "Cu M'gar Durian" and has been approved by the National Office of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology). The National Office of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology) certification is given according to Decision No. 5327, dated 10/7/2023.
“The collective trademark ‘Cu M’gar Durian’ will be the basis to help durian growers feel secure in production, building trust with customers, and create more prestige for Cu M'gar durian products", Mr Nhat said.
Mr. Le Anh Trung, Director of External Relations of Van Hoa Group - Vice Chairman of Dak Lak Durian Association said that they identified the Central Highlands, especially Dak Lak, as a key and potential area for agricultural production development, especially durian, so the Company has boldly invested in 3 agricultural processing factories with a total area of 20,000m2 and a packing facility in Dak Lak province.
The group wishes to be a bridge to bring Vietnamese agricultural products, especially durian, to a more widely access to the world market. To do this, building and developing trademarks of agricultural products, especially trademark protection, in order to increase competitiveness, create an identity and enhance export value are particularly important requirements. Therefore, the fact that Cu M'gar durian is granted a collective trademark protection certificate will help the durian fruit of Cu M'gar district in particular and of Dak Lak, in general, have the conditions to reach the global market. This will step by step affirm the brand in domestic and international markets.
In 2022, the National Office of Intellectual Property also issued a certificate of collective mark registration "Krong Pac Durian - Durian from Krong Pac” for durian in the Krong Pac district (Dak Lak). Thus, at present, Dak Lak province has 2 collective trademarks granted protection certificates for durian fruit.
“Regarding the expectation of Minister Le Minh Hoan, the agricultural industry must change its mindset to create agricultural products that meet the needs of the market, or in other words, the industry needs to produce according to the signal of the market, avoid production following habit. To achieve that, durian producers must understand the tastes of Chinese consumers”, the Deputy Director of the SPS Vietnam Office opened up in the meeting with Vietnam Agriculture News.
Through business trips in your country as well as surveying durian growing areas and packing facilities, Mr. Nam found that Chinese consumers often prefer to buy durian boxes, instead of buying individual fruits.
Before the harvest, the packaging specifications in durian boxes were transferred and handed over to the Vietnamese side by importers and distributors in China. The duties of the packing facilities, in addition to the phytosanitary treatment, to ensure that the packaging and labelling are as in the protocol, is to place the finished durian in a container and then refrigerate it at the right temperature.
According to Mr. Nam, ordinary consumers in China tend to buy durian boxes with 6 fruits inside, with a weight ranging from 18-20kg. On average, the finished durian needs to reach an average weight of 3-3.5kg.
To bring durian deeper into the Chinese market and reach more Chinese customers, Mr. Nam recommends that gardeners pay attention to the uniformity of finished products when harvesting, and how to "fit 6 fruits in a 20kg box".
