Recently, the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province has issued a plan to expand the pilot model of developing high-tech marine aquaculture in the province. The plan was issued after the province successfully organized a pilot model of high-tech marine aquaculture in the open sea area of Cam Ranh City in 2023.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Khanh Hoa, after one year of implementation, supporting 10 households to pilot high-tech marine aquaculture using HDPE cages, the harvest results brought outstanding efficiency compared to traditional cages. In particular, many cobia farming models had an average profit margin of 172%, lobster farming models reached 112%, and grouper farming models reached 131%.
In an interview with the Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper, Nguyen Tan Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province, said that after implementing the pilot model of high-tech marine aquaculture in the open sea area in Cam Ranh, the locality found that many positive factors were ensured.
Firstly, the environment of the aquaculture area is guaranteed to be clean, and the landscape is guaranteed. Secondly, the cages are made of HDPE material, which is flexible, durable, and can withstand storms of levels 10-12. Therefore, aquaculture farmers will also be more secure when their investment capital is minimized for damage caused by natural disasters. Thirdly, the harvested products are very good, ensuring quality to meet the needs of consumers and exports.
“We have thought many times that if we spontaneously raise fish with simple traditional cages like fishermen have in the past, the impact of climate change and the ecological environment of the sea and ocean will not be guaranteed. Therefore, the province considers high-tech marine farming as the top priority in developing the current and future marine economy to ensure a sustainable environment,” said Nguyen Tan Tuan.
According to the plan of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, from now until 2029, the province will expand about 240 hectares of high-tech marine farming, with a total budget of more than VND 545 billion, to convert traditional cages to HDPE cages.
Which phase 1, from now until the end of 2025, with an area of about 30 hectares for 150 households in Van Ninh District, Ninh Hoa Town and Nha Trang City, and Hon Noi area in Cam Lam District and Cam Ranh City. The estimated budget is more than VND 75 billion from the local budget, support funds from enterprises and counterpart capital of households converting traditional cages to HDPE cages.
Phase 2, from 2026 - 2027, expanded the pilot model of high-tech marine farming on a scale of 100 hectares for 500 households, with a total estimated budget of VND 225 billion.
Phase 3, 2028 - 2029, expands the pilot model of high-tech marine farming on a scale of 110 hectares for 550 households, with a total estimated budget of VND 245 billion. For the budget of phases 2 and 3, in addition to the budget and the people's counterpart capital, there is also a loan of about VND 140 billion.
To encourage and motivate fishermen to raise high-tech marine fish, the Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee said that, in addition to the policy of supporting initial capital for people to convert cages, controlling the quality of fish seed to meet the needs of farmers is very important. "Regarding the issue of fish seed, I think the Aquaculture Research Institute III located in the area will also ensure it", the Chairman of Khanh Hoa Province believes.
In addition, the province will also manage the farming planning well and have subsequent policies to encourage fishermen to participate in the high-tech marine farming development program. As well as resolutely handling cases of illegal farming in the future.
Along with developing high-tech marine farming, the head of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee said that the locality will also establish feed factories to manage feed and avoid excess that affects the marine farming environment and the development of other organisms. When the environment has good water quality, it will ensure the highest farming results.
