Chinese Minister appreciates Vietnamese training in the water resources sector

The Thuyloi University positioned as a leading institution in Vietnam for education and research in water resources, civil engineering, environment and climate change, along with disaster prevention.

"The establishment and development of the Thuyloi University are closely linked to crucial support from the Chinese government, especially in its early founding stages. The initial courses in Hanoi saw the participation of Chinese professors, while some Vietnamese students were sent abroad for training," said Prof. Dr. Trinh Minh Thu, the Rector of the Thuyloi University.

In the early years of the university's establishment, many experts from prestigious institutions such as the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU), and Hohai University came to Vietnam to support the construction of the main campus and directly participate in teaching.

Today, Thuyloi University consists of around 40 faculty members and staff who have received formal training at renowned Chinese universities, continuing to contribute to the school's development.

During the meeting, the university leadership proposed three key directions for cooperation between the two sides.

First, both sides will strengthen education and human resource development in the fields of water resources and irrigation through faculty and student exchange programs and joint training initiatives with major educational institutions in China.

Second, scientific research cooperation will be promoted in areas such as water resource management, disaster prevention, climate change adaptation, environmental protection, and the transfer of advanced technologies to seek sustainable solutions.

Finally, the Thuyloi University hopes that Chinese partners will collaborate in organizing international scientific conferences, enhancing academic and professional exchanges, and laying the foundation for jointly proposing cooperative projects in key areas of expertise.

The Minister of Water Resources of China congratulated the Thuyloi University on its success, recognizing its proud achievements in education and research over more than 65 years of history. Before this meeting, Minister Li Guo Ying visited Ho Chi Minh city and Tien Giang province, where he personally observed water regulation projects designed and built by alumni of the Thuyloi University.

"In the context of water resources becoming an increasingly strategic issue, training high-quality human resources and applying advanced science and technology play a crucial role in sustainable development. International cooperation in water resources is now more urgent and important than ever," Minister Li Guo Ying emphasized.

Accordingly, the Minister highly appreciated the development vision of the Thuyloi University and expressed his desire to collaborate in organizing events and conferences to promote technology exchange between Vietnam and China in the field of water resources management.

Prof. Dr. Kim Hai, Director of the International Cooperation Department and Science & Technology (Ministry of Water Resources of China), also spoke at the meeting, affirming the commitment to further promoting cooperation between the two sides.

On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Kim Hai announced that the 28th International Congress on Large Dams will be held in May 2025 and extended a formal invitation to the leadership of Thuyloi University of Vietnam to attend and exchange experiences.

Thuyloi University: Milestones in international cooperation

The university's international cooperation network is continuously expanding, with over 150 memorandums of understanding on collaboration in training, research, and expert and student exchanges with various universities, scientific networks, and organizations worldwide.

The cooperation takes various forms, including joint training programs, collaborative research projects, scholarship grants, consultancy, and technology transfer with international partners such as universities and research institutes from Japan, South Korea, the United States, China, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, and more. Notably, exchange programs provide students with opportunities to develop skills and adapt to international learning and working environments.

The university also places great emphasis on collaboration with businesses to enhance resources for laboratories and general facilities. Additionally, it works closely with enterprises to support students with internships, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in real-world working environments before graduation.
