Applying computational science to improve early warning capacity

(VAN) The 24th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2024) was held from July 1 to 4, 2024, at Thuyloi University, Hanoi.

ICCSA 2024 will be the next event in a series of highly successful conferences previously held in Athens, Greece (2023); Malaga, Spain (2022); Cagliari, Italy (2021); Online (2020); Saint Petersburg, Russia (2019), etc., and (as ICCS) in Amsterdam, Netherlands (2002) and San Francisco, USA (2001).

The first ICCSA conference was co-organized by C.J.K. Tan (UK) and M. Gavrilova (Canada) in 2003. ICCSA 2013 was the first held in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Osvaldo Gervasi, University of Perugia, Italy, Chairman of the ICCSA 2024, assessed that in recent times, Vietnam has been very interested in investing in the development of computational science, including irrigation.

When working with Thuyloi University, the organizing committee appreciated the university's spirit of cooperation and support, especially its professionalism and experience in organizing international events.

"Vietnam still has a lot of residual space to develop computational science. We can design the closest simulation models thanks to advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. From there, we can build and standardize database systems and provide the right choices," Mr. Gervasi shared.

The world faces many uncertain factors, including geopolitical conflicts, climate change, epidemics, etc, which have a significant impact on people's lives,

By increasing the use of technology, humanity can prevent some adverse effects and predict what may happen next, according to Italian experts. He also added that, through reliable models in weather forecasting, people can quickly make decisions, including directing and organizing agricultural production.

Computational science is the central pillar of most present research, as well as industrial and commercial activities, and it plays a unique role in exploiting innovative information and communication technologies.

The ICCSA offers an opportunity to discuss new issues, tackle complex problems, and find advanced solutions to shape new trends in computational science.

With the orientation of reflecting society from a scientific perspective, this year's prominent theme is machine learning and AI, as well as their applications in economic and industrial fields.

The conference is divided into six tracks: Computational Methods, Algorithms, and Scientific Application; High-Performance Computing and Networks Parallel and Distributed Computing; Geometric Modelling, Graphics, and Visualization; Advanced and Emerging Applications; Information Systems and Technologies; Urban and Regional Planning.

In addition, the conference also has 55 workshops focusing on current issues of importance to science, technology, and society.

The main contents will be presented, such as new mathematical approaches to solving complex computing systems, information and knowledge about the Internet of Things (IoT), new statistical and optimization methods, new problems and issues of sustainable development, smart cities, and related technologies.

Each paper presented at the conference must deal with original and unpublished work, not submitted for publication elsewhere. Submitted papers will be subject to stringent peer review by at least three experts and carefully evaluated based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of exposition.

All accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings and will be published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series, which provides for Scopus, EI Engineering Index Index, Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (included in ISI Web of Science), and several other indexing services. The papers will contain linked references, XML versions, and citable DOI numbers.

The authors of a selected number of top-quality papers will be requested to extend their papers for further review and publication as special issues in highly recognized international journals.

ICCSA 2024 includes two collections (LNCS 14813-14814). In addition, the peer review reports of 55 workshops and conference proceedings were published in a separate set of 11 collections (LNCS 14815-14825).

The organizing committee accepted 53 full papers, six short papers, and three PhD showcase papers out of 207 submissions (30% acceptance rate). For 55 workshops, the Organizing Committee accepted 281 full papers, 17 short papers, and two PhD showcase papers.

The conference was held in a combined format, with the direct participation of several delegates hosted by Thuyloi University in Hanoi.

In the inspirational speech, Prof. Dr. Trinh Minh Thu, President of Thuyloi University, said that the university has developed towards multidisciplinary training and research over the past many years. The university's scientific research quality is increasingly strengthened and has built a high reputation with international partners.

Mr. Thu shared that the irrigation industry often faces interdisciplinary problems or problems related to big data in the current era. Therefore, upgrading computational science plays an important role.

In recent years, the university has provided multidisciplinary training and widely applied information and communication technology to solve practical problems related to agriculture, rural areas, and farmers, such as drought and riverbank landslides, estuaries, saltwater intrusion, natural disaster warnings, etc.

Through crucial research teams and groups, the university has implemented many traditional scientific research topics and combined science and information technology to solve problems jointly.

"Promoting the application of computational science helps us improve early warning capacity, especially increasing response speed and accuracy of the information," Mr. Thu said, adding that in-depth research also helps farmers trace the origin of agricultural products and reduce post-harvest losses.

President Trinh Minh Thu also states that many famous speakers will present at ICCSA 2024. There are expected to be three professors, including Mr. Biswajeet Pradhan, University of Technology Sydney, Australia; Mr. K. Chang, Professor Emeritus, Iowa State University, USA; Mrs. My Thai, Associate Director of the University of Florida Nelms Institute for the Connected World.

Specifically, Mr. Pradhan's presentation will focus on exploiting AI for spatial analysis in natural hazard assessment. Mr. Chang recounted his journey in more than 40 years of software research and AI development. Mrs. Thai shares issues related to privacy preservation in large language models (LLM).
