Biosecurity - foundation for the development of the OCOP livestock product chain

(VAN) The northeastern province of Quang Ninh has developed livestock production in a sustainable way and applied biosecurity measures to dealing with complicated development of livestock and poultry diseases.

The whole province of Quang Ninh currently has 7 large livestock enterprises such as Phu Lam Co., Ltd., with a scale of 10,000 - 12,000 cows; Thien Thuan Tuong Mining Joint Stock Company, with 40,000 - 50,000 pigs, output 700 tonnes/month; Phuc Long Livestock Development and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Development Joint Stock Company with of 5,000 Tien Yen broodstock chickens.

The province also has 24 co-operatives and 240 livestock farms that have been granted farm economic certificates, 28 establishments granted VietGAP certificates, and 15 establishments granted disease safety certificates.

Quang Ninh province is developing concentrated breeding areas, such as the pig breeding area in Mong Cai city with an area of ​​32ha, Tien Yen chicken raising area with 850,000 chickens, and concentrated livestock and poultry breeding areas with 1,341ha.

Thanks to the focus on sustainable livestock development, in 2021, the province's livestock production value increased by 7.6 per cent, accounting for 56.44 per cent of the agricultural production value. Up to now, the province has more than 27,600 buffaloes, over 34,000 cows, nearly 263,000 pigs, and more than 4 million poultry herds.

Total meat production of all kinds for slaughter in 2021 were 97,344 tonnes. In the first three months of 2022, the meat production reached 27,451 tonnes. The output of livestock and poultry meat in the province currently meets 70 per cent of the provincial consumption demand.

Localities in the province are reviewing and allocating land funds to relocate livestock production establishments out of areas that are not permitted to raise livestock. It continues to call for enterprises to invest in livestock production towards commodity production. In addition, encourage livestock and poultry breeders to ensure the supply of 80 per cent of the province's breeding demand in the coming time.

Biosecurity is a top priority

From the application of biosafety breeding processes, the pig farm system of Thien Thuan Tuong Mining Joint Stock Company (Quang Ninh) has successfully protected the pig herd from the disease, helping the company to stabilize livestock development, contributing to increase the supply of livestock and poultry food.Tran Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Director of Thien Thuan Tuong Company said that right after receiving news that ASF broke out in China, and then appeared in some provinces of Vietnam, the company focused on investing in research to find out solutions to prevent disease.

Specifically, during the time of the African swine fever, the company banned unauthorized people and vehicles and animals to enter the farm, including pig trucks and customers' vehicles to buy pigs. The company arranged vehicles to transport pigs out of the farm for sale.

For staff, interns, and employees, they must go to work on time, get disinfected and change workwear before entering their workplaces.

The environmental sanitation of livestock breeding areas, living houses, weekly lime sprinkling of the surrounding environment, daily spraying of barn disinfectants, and organisation of killing rats, insects, flies and mosquitoes are carried out at least once a week.

In addition, the company strengthens management and monitoring of the situation of the pig herd, improves antibodies in the whole herd such as supplementing vitamins, nutrients...

During the disease prevention and control, the Board of Directors organised 24-hour duty at the production operator's house. In particular, to avoid a worst-case scenario, Thien Thuan Tuong has selected precious breeding pigs to bring to more than 60 locations, which are islands and deep forests to avoid possible outbreaks.

Hoa said thanks to strict implementation of processes and regulations in livestock production, the source of commercial pigs and breeding pigs of Thien Nam became very popular. Its supply to the market always ensures safety and prestige.

Currently, the company is the unit that keeps the original Mong Cai pig breed and many other precious pig breeds for agriculture ministry. It is also a partner to keep the pig breed for Quang Ninh.

As a pioneer in developing the OCOP chain in Quang Ninh, for many years, Thien Thuan Tuong has focused resources on applying science and technology to agricultural production.

The company has invested in importing pure pig breeds, breeding sows, commercial male breeds for a source of delicious quality food, raised under automatic European technology lines (imported from Denmark) on an area of ​​500 ha in Cam Pha City, Ba Che District and Van Don District.

Up to now, its total pig herd has reached about 50,000 heads, the number of poultry has reached over 80,000 heads. The company has invested from producing feed to livestock, organic fertilizer, growing safe vegetables, planting material areas to export animal feed.

In particular, Thien Thuan Tuong Company has been investing in livestock production, chain cultivation, from farming, processing to consumption. Recently, the company also opened a convenience store to provide OCOP products to consumers.

The OCOP started in Quang Ninh in 2013 has been expanded OCOP product chains from the model of Thien Thuan Tuong. With the brand "Viet Market OCOP" of Thien Thuan Tuong, together with other businesses will form a retail system, consumption for people in Quang Ninh and other localities such as Hanoi, Hai Duong, and Hai Phong.
