Vietnam’s export value of dragon fruit last year sharply declined due to COVID-19 pandemic but still topped US$1 billion.

According to the Department of Import and Export under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in November 2020, Vietnam earned US$82 million from exporting dragon fruit including the fresh dragon, frozen dragon fruit, dried dragon fruit and dragon fruit juice.

In the first 11 months of last year, Vietnam’s dragon fruit exports reached US$1.08 billion, a decline of 10.2 per cent compared with that of the same period in 2019.

China was still the biggest dragon fruit importer of Vietnam last year as in the first ten months of 2020, shipments to China reached US$ 895.6 billion, accounting for 92.3 per cent of total dragon fruit exports of Vietnam.

Of the Vietnamese dragon fruit exported to China, fresh white flesh dragon fruit accounted for 66.6 per cent, generating export revenue of US$596.7 million. It was 31 per cent lower than that of 2019.

Last year, US was the second biggest dragon fruit importer of Vietnam with shipments of US$21.1 million in the first ten months, a decrease of 28.3 per cent compared with that of the same period of 2019.

Fresh white flesh dragon fruit was the main export to the US with shipments of US$7.5 million last year. However, its export turnover reduced by 50.8 per cent compared with that of the same period of 2019.

In the US market, Vietnamese fresh red flesh dragon fruit is said to be tastier than those from other countries. However, the export value of the fresh red flesh dragon fruit to the US in the first ten months of 2020 was just US$4.1 million, a decline of 36 per cent compared with that of the same period of 2019.

Other important dragon fruit importers of Vietnam include Hongkong, the Netherlands, Thailand, India, Australia, Japan and Singapore.

Consumers are more and more interested in dragon fruit thanks to its benefits to health. As a result, global demand for the fruit is increasing at about 4 per cent yearly and would continue to go up in the following years.

According to the Department of Import and Export, to boost dragon fruit export, particularly fresh fruit, Vietnamese enterprises should pay more care to the requirements and regulations of importers.

The applications of VietGAP, GlobalGAP standards could help increase the competitiveness of Vietnamese dragon fruit in the market.
