A program was organized by the Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam on August 12-13 to promote the role of women in agriculture. Jennifer Schmidt and Jaclyn Wilson, two prominent American farmers, visited numerous agricultural production models in Soc Sơn District, Hanoi, as part of this program.
Jaclyn Wilson and Jennifer H. Schmidt were taken aback by the sight of thousands of chickens and pigs being raised without any foul smells or flies at the organic chicken and pig farm administered by Thu Thoan Cooperative (Minh Phu Commune, Soc Son District, Hanoi).
The two American women farmers entered the chicken coops to gain insight into the techniques employed by farm owner Nguyen Thu Thoan to raise indigenous chicken breeds. The circular agriculture model is implemented on the property, which occupies nearly one hectare.
The primary distinction between the microbial farming model and conventional farming methods is the use of a biological litter composed of rice hulls and feed. According to Director Nguyen Thị Thu Thoan, the Thu Thoan Bio Chicken Cooperative is presently managed by seven members and two employees, who oversee a farming area of over 5,000 square meters and approximately 3,000 chickens of various species.
The use of feed composed of natural herbs, turmeric powder, and gac oil is one of the secrets that are disclosed in poultry farming. The feed is fermented for 8 to 10 hours during the summer and for 24 hours during the winter. The feed is stored in sealed plastic containers and is suitable for use within the next 14 days after fermentation.
Thoan employs litter composed of rice husks and sawdust that has been combined with microbial agents to manage animal refuse. This method effectively eliminates bad smells from the farm. The refuse is collected and composted into organic fertilizer for the vegetable and medicinal plant areas after it has been used, thereby preventing any waste from being discharged into the environment.
Thoan observed that her farm has been certified as organic. The cooperative is unable to satisfy consumer demand, even though it sells over 10,000 chickens annually, excluding those from associated models. The plantation generates an average annual revenue of more than 1.5 billion VND.
The two American women producers, as well as international delegates, were enthusiastic about the opportunity to sample boiled eggs and century eggs that were produced from the farm's chicken eggs.

Schmidt and Wilson were astounded by the efficacy of the medicinal plants that were extensively cultivated within the local community during their visit to the Soc Son Medicinal Plant Conservation and Development Cooperative. Deputy Director Nguyen Thanh Tuyen was particularly proud of the burdock plant, which was one of the medicinal botanicals. This plant, which is indigenous to temperate regions, frequently flourishes in disturbed soils.
Jennifer H. Schmidt and Jaclyn Wilson participated in numerous meaningful activities and exchanged valuable information with Vietnamese women cultivators and scientists during their two-day stay in Vietnam. The visit concluded with a visit to Thanh Chuong Viet Palace, which provided a deeper understanding of the Vietnamese people's local culture.
