Since pineapple cultivation does not bring high income, farmers have found ways to avoid wasting water and soil from the ditches. The rice - pineapple model in Vinh Phuoc A commune (Go Quao district, Kien Giang province) not only brings economic efficiency but also contributes to environmental protection. Retaining soil quality and limiting erosion are considered visible bonuses to this model.
Nguyen Thi Kinh, a farmer in Phuoc Loi hamlet (Vinh Phuoc A commune), is busy taking care of her rice fields. She also sees this as a unique farming model that combines pineapple and rice cultivation, bringing high profits to her family. Kinh's family has nearly 2 ha of pineapples for the rice model. Pineapples are currently purchased by traders at VND 15,000/fruit. As for rice, the price is VND 8,000/kg.
With many years of experience in operating rice - pineapple farming model, Kinh confirms that rice is the optimal solution to maximize the land area. They have rice to eat while growing pineapples means more income to cover the family’s living expenses.
To achieve today's success, Kinh and many other farmers in Vinh Phuoc A have continuously learned and explored new farming techniques, participated in training courses, exchanged experiences with each other, and together built a sustainable production community.
Nguyen Van Hung, Chairman of Vinh Phuoc A Commune People's Committee, said, “The commune has more than 8,000 farmers and nearly 1,000 ha of pineapple and rice production. ‘Platform rice’ has been widely replicated in the locality and has brought positive results. Local authorities will continue to support farmers in accessing scientific and technical advances, improving product quality, and contributing to the construction of new countryside”.
