On November 19, Deputy Minister of MARD Tran Thanh Nam led a working team to conduct an inspection of the province of Quang Tri's sustainable-certified artificial forest scheme.
According to the Quang Tri Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province possesses more than 245,800 hectares of forest land, comprising more than 126,700 hectares of natural forest and 119,000 hectares of artificial forest. 95,675 hectares are used for production forest, of which approximately 81,000 hectares are used for acacia planting.
Apart from the central government's policies, Quang Tri province has released various guidelines and policies and collaborated with other international organizations to increase communication about the shift from the plantation for wood chips to giant trees with forest sustainable certification since 2010. As a result, Quang Tri became the first province in Vietnam to get FSC certification for sustainable forest management in companies and family models. The province now contains 22,067 hectares of FSC-certified forests.
The province, in particular, has established a chain of consumption of FSC-certified timber with CoC-certified enterprises that have committed to cover the entire output of certified timber from the Quang Tri FSC Association in general and cooperatives in particular at prices that are 15-18% higher than those for uncertified timber.
Between 2021 and 2025, the total area of approved artificial forest in the province will rise to between 26,050 and 28,550 ha, reaching 30,000 ha by 2030.
