Lobster farmers in Song Cau area suffered heavy losses

Storm no.12 caused floods in the lobster farming area in Xuan Dai Bay (Song Cau town, Phu Yen), leading to mass death of lobsters due to freshwater shock.

The storm no. 12 caused severe damages to aquaculture farmers, especially those who raise lobsters in cages in Xuan Dai Bay, the Song Cau Town’s Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue announced on November 12th.

Accordingly, by November 12th, 88 households with cage farming in Song Cau town reported facing losses. In Xuan Phuong commune alone, 77 households have lost 33,800 green lobsters raised at 164 cages, of which 32,000 were mature lobsters, estimated a loss of 5.5 billion VND and 1,800 baby green lobsters, estimated a loss of 40 million VND. In the Xuan Yen ward, 11 households have suffered losses of 31 cages.

In addition, Song Cau town also suffered a loss of 153.4 hectares of aquaculture farming area.

Xuan Loc commune was the most damaged with 130 hectares, of which 50 hectares of crabs, 80 hectares of extensive shrimp farming, estimated losses of about 6.9 billion VND, followed by Xuan Binh ward with a loss of 56 households with 19.5 hectares of shrimp farming ponds at the loss from 50-100%, estimated of nearly 1.5 billion VND.

Ponds for freshwater fish and whiteleg shrimp farming were also damaged in Xuan Thinh commune, Xuan Yen ward.
