Fruit and vegetable exports rebounded strongly at the end of the year

(VAN) In the first half of 2022, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports suffer due to China's "Zero Covid" policy. However, the export is recovering strongly.

Regardless, fruit exports tend to recover and increase in the last months of the year. According to the General Department of Customs, the export value of Vietnam's vegetables and fruits in October 2022 reached $309.7 million, up 22.9% compared to September 2022 and up 28.1% compared to October 2021.

With the above data, it is very clear that the export of vegetables and fruits is continuing to recover from August until now. Previously, in July, fruit and vegetable exports still had a negative growth rate when reaching only $250 million, down 5.7% compared to July 2021, and contributed to the reduction of fruit and vegetable exports in the first 7 months of the year by 15.8%.

In August, vegetable and fruit exports began to recover with a relatively high growth compared to August 2021 (up 19.7%). In September, fruit and vegetable exports still grew, although the increase decreased significantly. By October, vegetable and fruit exports increased sharply again as mentioned above.

The prosperity of fruit and vegetable exports first comes from China - the largest market. In October 2022, the export value of vegetables and fruits to China reached $151.7 million, up 44.2% compared to October 2021. Generally, in the first 10 months of the year, the export of vegetables and fruits to the Chinese market reached $1.2 billion, down 25.8% over the same period in 2021. Although this decrease is still large, it has improved significantly compared to the first 8 months of the year (down to 32.4%).

The Agency of Foreign Trade (Ministry of Industry and Trade), said that the prospect of exporting vegetables and fruits to the Chinese market has had many positive signs. Such as durian fruit has been exported through official channels to China since September 2022. After durian, the opportunity to promote banana exports is opening when The Protocol on the export of fresh bananas from Vietnam to China was also recently signed between the two countries.

The strong shift from unofficial to official export for the Chinese market will contribute to promoting the positive growth of the fruit and vegetable industry.

In addition, in the first 10 months of 2022, vegetables and fruits exported to other markets grew well, such as The US reached $219 million, up 18.8% over the same period in 2021; Thailand reached $153.4 million, up 26.4%; Japan reached $141.3 million, up 6%...

In November 2022, fruit and vegetable exports continued to grow well, estimated at $340 million, up 9.8% compared to October 2022 and up 30.5% compared to November 2021. As a consequence, in the 11 months of 2022, the export value of vegetables and fruits is estimated at $3.1 billion, down 4.9% over the same period in 2021.

According to the Agency of Foreign Trade, in Vietnam's key fruit and vegetable products, the prospect of fruit export is great. This is because Vietnam's main market for this product is China, which has a large import demand to meet the needs of more than 1.4 billion people with increasing incomes. Every year, China imports more than $15 billion of fruit and vegetable products. Many businesses expect that the opening for exports of a series of Vietnamese fruits to China will be the driving force to boost fruit exports in 2023.

Followed by processed fruits and vegetables, exports in the first 10 months of 2022 reached $841.8 million, up 12% over the same period in 2021. Processed products are the trend of the market in the coming time. The Covid-19 pandemic shows that the supply chain of fresh perishable food is only suitable for domestic consumption. Processed foods can be preserved for a long time to better meet the requirements of international consumers.

Dong Nai is one of the major fruit-producing provinces in the Southeast and is actively implementing codes for growing areas and packing facilities to promote fruit exports.

Mr. Cao Tien Sy, Director of Dong Nai Department of MARD, said that the province's fruit tree area is 61,700 ha. Of which, oranges and tangerines account for 2,900 ha, bananas account for 9,800 ha, mangoes account for 11,000 ha, pomelos account for 10,300 ha, rambutans account for 9,000 ha, durians account for 9,100 ha, jackfruit account for 4,600 ha with some other fruit trees. Total fruit production is over 683 thousand tons. Which, rambutan account for 153 thousand tons, bananas account for 139 thousand tons, mango account for 112 thousand tons, and pomelo account for 74 thousand tons...

At present, the province has 120 agricultural production areas with an area of 24,200 ha that has been granted planting area codes and 58 packing establishments with export codes. The fruit trees that have been granted planting area codes are lemon, rambutan, mango, banana, jackfruit, dragon fruit, and durian.
