Fishery industry identified as key strength of Tra Vinh province

(VAN) The fishery industry of Tra Vinh province strives to grow by at least 5%/year and reach a production value of 380 million VND/ha in 2021-2025 period.

The province has identified the fishery industry as one of the local strengths and potentials. According to Pham Thanh Binh, vice chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, the proportion of the industry in the structure of the agricultural sector has shifted in the direction of increasing in recent years.

In 2017, the proportion of the fishery industry accounted for just over 32%, but it has increased to 39% in 2020. The average growth rate of aquaculture production value reached 8.45%/year and the production value has reached 360 million VND/ha. This is the direction of development in line with the local orientation.

In the field of aquaculture, Tra Vinh has reviewed the construction of 4 production and seed production areas while identifying the main farming subjects such as: black tiger shrimp, white leg shrimp, pangasius, snakehead fish, clams, etc. …

Especially, up to now, the province has nearly 11,500ha of high-density intensive and semi-intensive whiteleg shrimp farming area. In which, high-density intensive farming covers an area of 650ha, concentrated in coastal districts: Duyen Hai, Cau Ngang, Tra Cu and Duyen Hai town, with an average yield of 50-70 tons/ha.

Speaking of the shrimp farming of Tra Vinh farmers recently, Lam Duy Khoa, Director of Tra Vinh Branch - Duong Hung Shrimp Company said: "The shrimp farming in Tra Vinh Province is developing strongly. In particular, a model of high-tech white-leg shrimp farming in round cement ponds has been recently developed, obtaining high productivity and efficiency. Other forms of intensive and semi-intensive farming are also being developed. Currently, the company's demand to buy shrimp seed is over 1 million posts per day.

Achieving such positive results, the local authorities have been concerned about research and technology transfer. The local functional departments have built a model of producing high-quality black tiger shrimp seed, a model of high-density intensive white-leg shrimp farming, and completed 5 technical processes for raising white leg shrimp larvae with high density, producing clam bran on canvas ponds or rearing bran clams...

In which, Tra Vinh University is one of the units with many researches on transferring technology to the people such as successfully implementing the project of raising parent black tiger shrimp, transferring the technology of white leg shrimp farming in 3 stages with high efficiency.

The saltwater aquaculture experimental farm of the Faculty of Agriculture and Fisheries - Tra Vinh University (in Ba Dong Hamlet, Truong Long Hoa Commune, Duyen Hai Town) is the first unit in Tra Vinh Province to implement a 3-stage whiteleg shrimp farming model with tarpaulin technology, which has been popular in the province in recent years.

Diep Thanh Toan, Deputy Head of Fisheries Department, Faculty of Agriculture and Fisheries - Tra Vinh University said: “Five years ago, the University sent staff to study on the successful models in neighboring provinces. Besides serving as a place for students to practice, the implementation area of the model has also been regularly visited by many shrimp farming households in this area. The model has been effectively implemented and motivated locals to boldly switch investments. It has particularly effective in managing the risks to shrimp farming while reducing livestock costs and effectively handling wastewater. It is deployed even in hot seasons in roofed farming areas.

A local, Hong Van Tuan in Ba Dong Hamlet, Truong Long Hoa Commune, Duyen Hai Town, has boldly invested VND750 million on building 2 ponds, each of which is 1,200sq.m, after seeing the effectiveness of the whiteleg shrimp farming model integrated with tarpaulin technology.

He has found that the model was easy to implement, especially in shrimp care and management in each stage, while it helps to reduce risks, losses, and save money on wastewater treatment.

In the hot seasons, the pond is covered with a roof to help stabilize the water temperature.

“I’m very excited because I have recovered my capital and made a profit in the first farming season. In the following crops, depending on the situation and market prices, I’m still able to earn profits from VND100 million to 1 billion/crop. Compared with the traditional method of shrimp farming in earthen ponds, the efficiency is much higher,” he said.
