For many years, farmers in Sa Dec flower village (Tan Quy Dong ward, Sa Dec city, Dong Thap province) have been becoming rich rapidly thanks to growing adenium plants, especially Sunshine (Anh Duong) adenium varieties, which traders order tens of thousands of pots per year to export to Dubai (UAE), bringing big revenue for farmers with many people can make profit as up to billions of VND a year.
At this time, the farmers of Sa Dec flower village are busy fertilizing the Sunshine adenium, ready for a new harvest. They are also preparing for the next crop, with branching, planting young plant into the new pot, etc.
Nguyen Thanh Hung, owner of a adenium garden under the same name in Tan Quy Dong ward, says that there have been 3 generations in his family growing ornamental flowers, mainly roses. Since about 10 years ago, he had completely switched to planting adenium for domestic consumption and exporting tens of thousands of trees to Dubai every year.

“As for Sunshine adenium, the customer ordered 40,000 pots, but I could only deliver 20,000 pots with prices ranging from VND 50,000 to 80,000 VND a plant depending on the size. We work and sign contract with traders, they will transfer the money first. Then, on the appointment day, we bundle the plants together, load them into container. The transport will take about a month to arrive,” Hung said.
Time ago, traders went to the adenium garden to buy many kinds of flowers in diverse colors with nearly 30 names, such as Hong Ngoc, Kim Lan, Dai My Nhan, Kieu Diem, etc.
Later on, customers preferred the Sunshine adenium variety. The flower has separate crimson flowers because they were bred by the method of cuttings, so the next generation keeps the original color. The tree is also drought tolerant, suitable for the climate in the Middle East, with little loss during long-distance transportation and a short care period.

Hung's adenium garden is diverse in types and colors with an area of more than 10,000m2, producing nearly 60,000 plants each year. He earns over VND 3 billion, after deducting costs and salary for 5 employees, his family makes a profit of about VND 1 billion.
Dang Tuan Hai, owner of Hai Map adenium garden, living in Tan Quy Dong ward is a farmer who "makes money" from growing adenium plants.
He Hai recalled: "Last year, a customer ordered 15,000 plants, but I could gather only 5,000 Sunshine adenium plants. I focused on other adenium varieties because the demand is as big as beyond the planting ability of the whole Sa Dec village.

According to Hai, selling through traders reduces farmers' profits. Therefore, in the long run, farmers need to be well prepared at all stages from production to market supply, profits will increase by 25%.
Growing Sunshine adenium is easy as you just need to cut the branches, watering and fertilizing, wait for the right day, then put in the pot. After 1 year, the plant produces flower in bunches of buds, lasting from 15 to 20 days. In the dry season, the flowers bloom continuously and beautifully. In the rainy season, the plant easily gets root rot, especially on the plants at 2nd year or over.
Nguyen Kim Phuong Em, living in Tan Khanh Trung commune, Sa Dec city shared: “I have worked for Hai Map adenium garden for more than 6 years. The work at the garden is not hard, rotating the stages such as cutting branches, extracting pots, etc. Working time is 8 hours a day, with the salary of VND 6 million a month, enough for family expenses.”
Nguyen Thi Ngoc, Head of Economic Department of Sa Dec City said: Ornamental flowers in Sa Dec city have been developing for many years now, including adenium trees that have export advantages.
The Economic Department encourage people to learn foreign languages to facilitate the exchange of goods for export. The city also has policies to help farmers to adapt to digital transformation through e-commerce platforms.
