On April 24th, Mr Dao Minh Dong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bach Long Vy Island District, Hai Phong City, announced that the district had just released 2 sika deer into the natural environment. The two sika deer, one male and one female, were purchased from Huong Son District, Ha Tinh Province, for a total of VND 39 million, contributed by local residents, businesses, and relevant authorities on the island.
After releasing the deer into the natural environment, the authorities of Bach Long Vy District assigned armed forces units and concerned citizens with the responsibility to protect and manage the deer herd to ensure the preservation of the island's biodiversity.
"Recently, upon further observation, we found that there were already 3 female deer on the island, and now with the addition of 2 more, there are a total of 5. The existing deer herd has been living in the wild for nearly 10 years, indicating that the environment on the island is suitable. We hope that with the addition of male individuals this time, the deer herd will thrive and develop well", Mr Dong shared.
Bach Long Vy is a remote island with harsh weather conditions, making animal husbandry difficult. Currently, there are only about 60 buffaloes, cows, and horses on the island, and their growth is not encouraged due to limitations in food sources.

Regarding poultry and pigs, currently, the numbers are modest and mainly concentrated in units under the standing armed forces on the island. Basically, the food supply from farming here is not enough to meet the demand, so people and units still have to purchase food from the mainland.
Sharing more about this issue, Mr Dao Minh Dong expressed the desire to receive support in poultry breeding stock and new farming technologies from organizations, businesses, and individuals to help people on the island increase production and be more proactive in food sources.
For large grass-eating animals, the island district will only further develop the sika deer herd. As for other wild animal species, if any organization wants to introduce them to the island for conservation and development purposes, the authorities are ready to provide support.
"In such remote conditions, with unpredictable weather, storms, and tropical depressions can hit at any time, if the island can be somewhat self-sufficient in terms of food, then people will be more reassured because there are times when large waves make it impossible for ships from the mainland to reach Bach Long Vy", Mr. Dong emphasized.
