On November 28, the Dong Nai Nature-Culture Reserve celebrated its 20th anniversary (November 28, 2004 - November 28, 2024).
In 1997, Dong Nai province pioneered the initiative to “close natural forests” and demonstrated strong determination to establish a vast nature reserve encompassing over 150,000 hectares of natural forest.
Since its establishment in 2004, the Dong Nai Nature-Culture Reserve has been tasked with preserving the remaining forest area, restoring and enriching the forest, protecting and promoting revolutionary historical sites, safeguarding the environment and headwater areas, and enhancing the values of the Trị An Reservoir and the lower Dong Nai River’s wetlands. These efforts align with the sustainable economic development and environmental protection strategies of Dong Nai province and the Southeast region.
Nguyen Hoa Hao, Director of the Dong Nai Nature-Culture Reserve, shared that over the past 20 years, the Reserve has received consistent support and guidance from the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Council, the Provincial People's Committee, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dong Nai province. With funding from the provincial budget and contributions from domestic and international organizations, the Reserve has achieved significant milestones in forest protection, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of ecological, cultural, and historical values.
Additionally, the Reserve has excelled in research, environmental education, and awareness campaigns. These efforts have included conservation activities and the development of eco-tourism, contributing to local government initiatives to create livelihoods for residents in buffer and core areas of the Reserve.
"Twenty years is not just a number; it represents a long journey filled with passion, dedication, sacrifice, and relentless effort. It is also a moment to honor and express gratitude to generations of leaders, staff, workers, and organizations who have contributed to protecting and developing the Reserve," said Nguyen Hoa Hao.
Over the past two decades, the Reserve has successfully fulfilled its mission of conserving biodiversity and promoting ecological, cultural, and historical values. With its rich ecosystems, the Reserve is not only home to hundreds of rare species of flora and fauna but also serves as a "green gem" in the heart of the Southeast region. It plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, protecting water sources, and ensuring a sustainable living environment for the surrounding communities.
Speaking at the anniversary celebration, Mr. Vo Van Phi, Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee, acknowledged and highly appreciated the contributions of the leadership, staff, and workers of the Dong Nai Nature-Culture Reserve over the years, recognizing their significant achievements in conservation, protection, and development efforts.
The Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee noted that on June 29, 2011, the Reserve, along with Cát Tiên National Park, was recognized by UNESCO as the “Dong Nai World Biosphere Reserve.” This designation highlights a model of sustainable, multi-purpose conservation that harmonizes human and natural needs under the principle of “conservation for development – development for conservation.”
To enable the Reserve to continue fulfilling its functions and duties in biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest development, Mr. Vo Van Phi emphasized the need for effective management. He recommended prioritizing the training and professional development of staff, enhancing their expertise and political integrity.
Additionally, he urged the Reserve to focus on developing projects, investing in infrastructure, and applying scientific and technological advancements to improve the efficiency of forest management, protection, and sustainable resource conservation.
Maintain regular communication and collaboration with universities, research institutes, and international organizations to jointly implement scientific research projects, programs, and initiatives related to biodiversity conservation, forest development, and environmental protection within the Reserve.
Innovate content and outreach methods to engage local residents, empowering them to become active advocates for environmental protection. Continue supporting community development policies in buffer zones to improve the cultural and spiritual well-being of local residents.
Notably, the Reserve must effectively implement the Ecotourism, Leisure, and Recreation Development Plan through 2030.
