Vietnam currently ranks only 43rd in the markets supplying vegetables and fruits to the EU.
According to the Agency of Foreign Trade (Ministry of Industry and Trade), statistics from the European Statistics Agency (Eurostat) show that, in the first four months of 2022, Vietnam's vegetables and fruits imported into the EU reached 24,000 tons, worth 62.5 million EUR (equivalent to $63 million), up 7.6% in quantity and 29% in value over the same period in 2021.
The average import price of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables was high, reaching 2,625 EUR/ton, up 20% over the same period in 2021.
The 27 member countries of the EU have a population of more than 500 million people and a significant import demand for fruit and vegetable products. EU imports of fruits and vegetables in the first four months of 2022 reached 28.7 million tons, worth 39.5 billion EUR (equivalent to $40 billion).
However, imports from Vietnam only accounted for nearly 0.1% of the EU's total fruit and vegetable imports in the first four months of 2022. Vietnam currently ranks only 43rd in the markets supplying vegetables and fruits to the EU. Therefore, there are still many opportunities for Vietnamese fruit and vegetable businesses to enter the EU market in the coming time.
The EU market requires traceability and product quality standards, especially food safety and hygiene. Therefore, businesses need to learn and grasp information about the market, from consumer tastes to regulations and standards on rules of origin, food safety, and hygiene.
