According to the US International Trade Commission (USITC), in the first nine months of 2021, the country's imports of processed fruits and vegetables reached USD 7.4 billion, up 17% over the same period in 2020.
Vietnam is the 11th largest supplier of processed fruits and vegetables to the USA in the first nine months of 2021, with a turnover of USD 171.9 million, up 49.9% compared to the same period last year.
Vietnam’s import share of processed fruits and vegetables accounted for 2.3% of the total import value, an increase of 0.5 percentage points over the same period in 2020.
The United States mainly imported fruit, nuts and other edible parts of plants, otherwise processed or preserved (HS code 2008). Fruit juices including grape must and vegetable juices, unfermented and not containing added alcohol or added sugar/other sweetening matter (HS code 2009) also hold a great portion in the total import value.
These are also the two main types of processed fruits and vegetables that Vietnam supplies to the US market. Imports of HS 2008 products from Vietnam reached USD 10.9 million, up 2.6% over the same period in 2020. Imports of HS 2009 products reached USD 7.6 million, up 111.4%.
This high growth rate shows that Vietnam’s products are gradually meeting the requirements of US consumers.
Vietnam’s processed fruits and vegetables in total US imports still account for a very low proportion. Even so this is a great opportunity for businesses to increase exports to this grand market.
It is essential to invest in modern processing lines to produce a variety of processed fruit and vegetables in line with the taste of US consumers.
