Vietnam’s fertilizer exportation marks a comeback to over 1 million tons

In 2020, fertilizer exports of Vietnam strongly increase in both volume and value, therefore marks the comeback to over 1 million tons after 7 years.
Vietnam’s fertilizer exportation reached over 1 million tons in 2020.

Vietnam’s fertilizer exportation reached over 1 million tons in 2020.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in 2020, Vietnam exported 1,163 million tons of fertilizer, valued at 341 million USD, up 39.7% in volume and 27.1% in value compared to 2019.

Consequently, it takes 7 years for Vietnam’s fertilizer exportation to reach 1 million tons again. The last time Vietnam exported more than 1 million tons of fertilizer was in 2014 (reached 1,059 million tons).

From 2011 to 2014, Vietnam’s fertilizer exportation has always stayed above 1 million tons. To be specific, 2011 reached 1,073 million tons; 2012 reached 1,345 million tons; 2013 reached 1,191 million tons. In particular, the amount of fertilizer exported in 2012 holds the record for the fertilizer industry of Vietnam up until now. The export value reaching 554 million USD is also the highest ever.

After 2014, Vietnam’s fertilizer exports fell below 1 million tons and continued to fluctuate, with increase and decrease rate regularly switching places. It was not until 2020 that the amount of fertilizer for exports returned to a volume of over 1 million tons.

Vietnamese fertilizer mostly exports to the ASEAN countries, with Cambodia as the main market. In 2020, Cambodia remains the biggest market for Vietnamese fertilizer, with a number of 422,000 tons, valued at 131 million USD, accounting for 36% in volume and 38.6% in value.

Other markets in ASEAN for Vietnamese fertilizer include Malaysia, with 94,000 tons, valued at 18 million USD; Myanmar, with 56,000 tons, valued at 17 million USD; Laos, with 39,000 tons, valued at 15 million USD; Thailand, with 30,000 tons, valued at 8.5 million USD; Phillippines, with 18,000 tons, valued at 5.2 million USD.

Vietnamese fertilizer is also exported to some markets in East Asia. In 2020, fertilizer exportation to Korea reached 20,000 tons, worth over 3 million USD; exportation to Taiwan reached 13,000 tons, worth 3.6 million USD; exportation to Japan reached 4,000 tons, worth 1 million USD.

Additionally, Vietnamese fertilizer is likewise exported to several African markets. For example, fertilizer exportation to Mozambique in 2020 reached 8,000 tons, valued at 3.5 million USD; exportation to Angola reached 815 tons, valued at 400,000 USD,…

The amount of fertilizer for exports at the moment is less than 20% of the total output, but the promotion for exportation in the past year has helped Vietnam’s fertilizer industry be more stable in terms of output, especially when agriculture production is affected by the epidemic and unfavored weather conditions.
