Vietnam wants Indonesia to set up hotline support for fisheries activities

(VAN) On May 9, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on the occasion of attending the 42nd ASEAN Summit.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed gratitude for the warm welcome of the host country Indonesia. The Prime Minister of Vietnam highly appreciated Indonesia's choice of Labuan Bajo as the venue for the 42nd ASEAN Summit and believes that the Summit will be a milestone for the city to prosper in the future.

The Prime Minister reiterated his impression of the first foreign trip as Prime Minister to Indonesia in 2021 and affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to and wishes to promote the Strategic Partnership with Indonesia further.

The two leaders highly appreciated the strong development in all fields over the past time; agreed to promote the traditional solid friendship further, creating a driving force for the development of the Vietnam - Indonesia Strategic Partnership to a new height. The two countries' relations are strategic for the two countries and the region's peace, stability, and development.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister gave the greetings of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Vo Van Thuong, and Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Vuong Dinh Hue to President Widodo.

The two leaders agreed to strengthen the exchange of delegations and contacts at all levels, practically celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership in 2023; effectively promote bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including the Vietnam - Indonesia Bilateral Cooperation Committee and the Joint Committee on economic, scientific and technical cooperation; actively implement the signed agreements, including the Action Program for the period of 2019-2023, the implementation of the Vietnam-Indonesia Strategic Partnership, and the early development of the Action Program for the period 2024-2028, creating basis to promote more comprehensive and extensive cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh suggested the two countries maintain the trade growth trend, striving to bring bilateral trade turnover to US$ 15 billion or higher before 2028 and in a more balanced direction. Prime Minister also suggested that Indonesia create favorable conditions for Vietnamese goods to access the Indonesian market, strengthening maritime cooperation, including deploying a hotline to support fisheries activities and sharing information on law enforcement at sea.

The President of Indonesia highly appreciated and supported the cooperation proposals of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. He affirmed that Indonesia always attaches importance to and further strengthens the strategic partnership with Vietnam. The two leaders also agreed to enhance cooperation in new areas such as energy transformation, digital transformation, and infrastructure.

In addition, the two leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam would continue cooperating and supporting Indonesia to successfully assume the ASEAN Chair 2023, strengthening solidarity, unity, self-reliance, and ASEAN's centrality role.

Regarding the East Sea dispute, the two leaders reaffirmed their support for maintaining the unity, central role, and joint position of ASEAN in the East Sea issue, fully implementing the DOC, and promoting the early achievement of an effective and efficient COC following international law, including UNCLOS 1982.

Leaders of ASEAN member countries and around 550 other delegates are participating in the 42nd ASEAN Summit.

Besides the plenary sessions and retreats of the 42nd ASEAN Summit, PM Chính will attend dialogues between leaders of ASEAN countries and representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC), and the High-Level Task Force on ASEAN Community’s Post-2025 Vision.

The Prime Minister’s participation in the 42nd ASEAN Summit and related activities affirms that Viet Nam makes positive, proactive, and responsible contributions to strengthening ASEAN solidarity and effectively responding to challenges. It also demonstrates Việt Nam's priorities in terms of strategic infrastructure connectivity, digital transformation, green transformation, food security, energy, sub-regional development, and response to climate change, affirming the role, image, and prestige of ASEAN, thereby contributing to the building of the ASEAN Community, and upholding ASEAN's principled stance on international and regional issues.

The activities are an effective implementation of the foreign policy of the 13th National Party Congress on continuing to promote and improve the efficiency of foreign affairs and international integration and Directive 25 of the Secretariat on strengthening and raising the level of multilateral diplomacy by 2030.
