Vietnam still exports 6 - 6.5 million tons of rice

Director of the Department of Crop Production Nguyen Nhu Cuong said that in 2020-2021, the planting plan in both the South and the North will not change compared to previous years.

According to Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, the cultivation of winter-spring crop in the South is currently in accordance with the direction and plan of the farming industry. In recent years, especially from 2019, Vietnam's rice export price has been increasing steadily, reaching an average of US$ 500/ton, continuing to be higher than the price of Thai and Indian rice.

In order to get this result, Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong said, Vietnam's agricultural sector has been preparing for many years, restructuring the rice industry in the direction of reducing costs, improving quality and trade, and effectively seizing the opportunities despites the  in the world market, especially in the last Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the data of the winter-spring crops from 2019 to 2021 released by the Department of Crop Production, the number of quality rice products in the Mekong Delta has increased sharply year by year.

Specifically, the area of quality rice in the Mekong Delta increased from 45% in the winter-spring crop of 2019-2020 to 48% in the winter-spring crop of 2020-2021. The area of fragant rice specialty increased from 28.5% in 2019 - 2020 to over 31% in 2020-2021; the area of sticky rice increased from 10.7 to 11.3% and the average rice area increased from 12.6 decreased to 8.4% this year.

According to Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Vietnam still needs to maintain a certain area of average rice variety structure in order to meet the diversed demand. However, at the same time, Vietnam's rice industry has been operating according to the needs of the market, according to which businesses and farmers will be proactive in selecting high value rice varieties and suitable production methods.
