UNICEF is coordinating closely with the Government of Vietnam and partners to quickly assess the urgent needs of children and women in the areas most devastated by Typhoon No. 3 (Typhoon Yagi).

In response, UNICEF has activated a plan to urgently provide essential items to ensure clean water and personal hygiene, as well as health care and nutrition items, educational materials, and child protection guidelines. In addition, UNICEF also prepares to provide cash assistance to families with vulnerable children and pregnant women to help them overcome and recover from natural disasters.

UNICEF emphasizes that urgent action is extremely necessary to protect the most vulnerable people after this disaster. As of now, about 5.5 million children are affected and need support; 400,000 households are lacking domestic water; nearly 50,000 houses were severely damaged, and approximately 600 schools were closed.

In natural disasters, children are the most affected, as storms have caused many families to relocate, schools to close, and health services to disrupt. At the same time, increase the risk of diseases caused by a lack of clean water and hygiene. When disasters happen, adults may recover more quickly, but children are more deeply affected, with consequences that can last a lifetime.

UNICEF calls on domestic and international benefactors to join the urgent mission to accompany heavily affected children and families.
