Unexpected shrimp crop due to the absence of flood

Due to the absence of floods in 2020, shrimp ponds and lakes were not washed away by flood water, this year's shrimp crop in Binh Dinh province faced many uncertainties due to pollution.

A new shrimp crop has been started

According to the plan, in 2021, Binh Dinh province will stock shrimp on an area of 2,107 ha. Intensive shrimp farming areas in Phu Cat and Phu My districts are stocking the first crop from February to April. Farming areas in lagoons and estuaries in the south of Hoai Nhon town are from February to mid-May.

Other shrimp farming areas in Hoai Nhon Town, Quy Nhon City and the districts of Tuy Phuoc, Phu Cat, Phu My are stocking the first crop from March to May. Currently, in some shrimp farming areas on sand and high tide areas in Binh Dinh, shrimp farmers are improving ponds and lakes to prepare for 1/2021 crop according to the seasonal schedule issued by the provincial agriculture sector.

Mr. Truong Van, Lo Dieu village, Hoai My commune (Hoai Nhon town), who has two shrimp ponds with an area of 1,500 square meters, said that he had renovated the pond from the beginning of December of the lunar year and cleaned the water to stock 500,000 vanamei with appropriate density as recommended by the functional sector.

According to Binh Dinh Fisheries Department, the farming areas in the lagoons and estuaries in this province are in poor conditions due to environmental pollution, so there is currently no household stocking shrimp yet. Farmers here are reinforcing, dredging, cleaning and improving the pond to prepare for stocking of the first crop.

Facing uncertainties

Mr. Pham Van Chay, Head of the community management board of 25 ha shrimp farming areas towards biosecurity in Dong Dien village, Phuoc Thang commune (Tuy Phuoc district), said that the first crop of this year will face many difficulties because in the absence of floods, food residues in the previous year's crops will not be washed away, causing pollution.

Mr. Chay also said that, in the face of these unfavorable conditions, shrimp farmers must carefully renovate ponds and lakes, especially treat the pond bottoms so as to have a safe crop. Shrimp feed left over from previous crops that have not been cleaned by floods must be handled thoroughly with lime and probiotics. Normally, the treatment of one hectare of pond costs about VND 25-30 million, but in the current condition, after pumping water in, farmers have to use chemicals to kill bacteria and culture microorganisms to regenerate the water environment, which will cost about VND 5 million/ha, before they can stock shrimp.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan, Deputy Director of Binh Dinh Department of Livestock and Animal Health, to help shrimp farmers in the province, the provincial functional sector has provided them with more than 57 tons of chemicals for water treatment.

The Binh Dinh Department of Livestock and Animal Health has also strengthened the quarantine of postlarvae to ensure quality input. In addition, technical staff will be sent to instruct shrimp farmers on how to improve ponds and lakes and take samples of shrimp to test for disease.

“According to forecasts, in January of 2021, gloomy weather due to the influence of northeast monsoons will cause unfavorable conditions for shrimp growth and development. The northeast monsoon will make the water in the pond cold, newly stocked shrimp in this inappropriate living conditions will be weak and easy to get diseases”, shared Mr. Pham Van Chay, Head of the Community Management Board of shrimp farming areas towards biosecurity in Dong Dien, Phuoc Thang commune (Tuy Phuoc district, Binh Dinh).
