Tuyen Quang is a mountainous province with 448,680 ha of forest and forestry land (including special-use, protection, and production forest land). The total forest area currently has more than 422,400 hectares, of which the site of timber plantation is over 140,700 hectares. Tuyen Quang's forest coverage rate is over 65%, ranking 3rd in Viet Nam.
Forests of Tuyen Quang province are increasingly asserting their economic value. Currently, Tuyen Quang has granted FSC certificates to over 35,800 hectares of planted forests, the highest in the country, contributing to increasing the value of planted timber by 15%. In addition, the province now has more than 69,000 hectares of large timber forests.
Tuyen Quang has promoted applying science and technology to research and produce quality forestry seedlings. The province has researched and successfully used produce hybrid acacia by tissue culture method. Through research, two-hybrid lines of acacia 102 and BV342 have been selected, currently planted, and managed by Tuyen Binh Forestry One Member Limited Company.
Since 2016, Tan Trao University has successfully implemented a project to build a tissue culture house with an area of 433m2, with a capacity of 1.5 million plants/year to cultivate plants and nurse seedlings before launching the nursery.
Mrs. Phan Thi Bao's family, village 1, Tan Tien commune, Yen Son district, received a contract from Tuyen Binh Forestry One Member Limited Company to plant forests. In 2015, she experimented with planting 3 hectares of Acacia Mangium. After five years, with the proper fertilization process, the tree trunk is tall, strong, and not broken; Mrs. Bao's family has earned a profit of VND 140 million. At present, people in the area have also bought a lot of tissue culture plants to plant.
Currently, the forestry sector's GRDP in Tuyen Quang is over VND 1,600 billion, accounting for over 17.5% of the GRDP in agriculture, forestry, and fishery; average growth of over 8%/year; the value of wood processing products accounts for 14% of industrial production value of the province. From now to 2025, Tuyen Quang province has set a goal of developing another 20,000 hectares of large timber forests, bringing the total area of large timber forests to 89,000 hectares.
Implementing Decree No. 75/2015/ND-CP dated September 9, 2015, of the Government on mechanisms and policies for forest protection and development, Tuyen Quang province has supported contracted forest protection with over 85 thousand ha/year, support to protect over 10 thousand ha of forest/year for 4,104 ethnic minority households with a total support budget of over VND 132 billion.
To promote forest economic efficiency, the People's Committee of Tuyen Quang province has approved the Sustainable forestry development project for 2021 - 2030, with a vision for 2035. The project aims to develop medicinal plants and non-timber forest products under the forest canopy.
In addition, Tuyen Quang province is also implementing a pilot project on forest carbon credit business to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, sustainably manage forest resources, and conserve and improve forest carbon stocks. Under this program, forest owners will have an additional source of income without needing to exploit the forest.
With more than 448 thousand hectares of forest, the province has an average annual estimate of about 4 million forest carbon credits for sale. However, many specific scientific processes and tests are needed to profit from this commodity.
More than a month ago, Forest rangers communicated about the benefits of commercializing forest carbon credits. Mr. Ma Van Bi’s family, Ca village, Minh Thanh commune, was more motivated to expand by more than 1 hectare of acacia, bringing the family's total forest area to 5 hectares.
Currently, forest growers are supported by the state, from fertilizers to seedlings. They now have additional income from forest carbon conversion, making farmers more attached to the forest economy for a long time.
Tuyen Quang strives to become a typical province in sustainable forestry by 2025; over 30% of the planted production forest area has been granted a certificate of sustainable forest management; the average yield of planted forest timber is over 17m3/hectare/year; the average logging output of planted forests is 1.1 million m3 of timber/year.
