The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has just sent an official dispatch to the Thai Embassy in Hanoi to suspend the import of live pigs into Vietnam.
In Notice No. 3157/BNN-TY dated May 28th, as claimed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to the notice of the quarantine agency under the Animal Health Department of Vietnam, on May 19th, 2021, during the quarantine process to import a batch of 980 live pigs from Thailand into Vietnam for slaughter for food, the quarantine agency discovered that this batch of pigs was infected with African Swine Fever.
In order to prevent African Swine Fever from entering Vietnam and spreading the disease to domestic pigs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has informed the Embassy of Thailand in Hanoi to suspend the import of live pigs for slaughter for food from Thailand from June 30th, 2021.
Regarding the batches of live pigs that have been signed by enterprises of the two countries to trade and transport to Vietnam by the end of June 29, 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will continue to allow the importation and will direct the veterinary authorities to organize strict control to ensure disease safety and food sanitary safety.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has assigned the Animal Health Department to coordinate with the competent authorities of Thailand to assess the epidemic situation in Thailand's pigs raised for slaughter for food and consider allowing imports to be resumed when disease safety conditions are guaranteed.
