In response to World Environment Day (June 5), raising public awareness about the protection of a green-clean-beautiful living environment, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City and the Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection in Kien Giang coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Syngenta Vietnam Company to organize the launching ceremony of tree planting activities and the program "Clean environment - Green life" - collecting pesticide packaging.
The activity occurred in Can Tho City and Kien Giang province. The cooperative unit planted 500 black star trees and 1,500 giant crape-myrtle trees along the bypass of Thoi Lai town, Can Tho city. In Kien Giang, 300-star oil trees are planted along the bypass of Ben Nhut, Long Thanh commune, Giong Rieng district. Also, the local government mobilized and called on farmers to clean up garbage collection and clear weeds on the road to plant trees.
First, this activity is building model rural roads, contributing to the consolidation of biodiversity when implementing a combination of ornamental plants. The next step is to contribute to raising awareness of environmental protection. Farmers can participate in training sessions, guide them to use pesticides properly, safely, and responsibly, and collect pesticide packaging to help improve the living environment.
Mr. Tran Thanh Vu, General Director of Syngenta Vietnam, said developing business in Vietnam, Syngenta has always pioneered bringing advanced solutions in crop science and agro-pharmaceuticals, helping farmers improve their farming conditions, improving productivity and quality of agricultural products and improving economic efficiency. In addition, the company also wishes to build modern agriculture, rural worth living in. In which focus on implementing social programs and activities for the community, such as clean environment programs and green life. A small action that helps raise farmers' awareness of environmental protection and the responsible use of pesticides. This is also the purpose that Syngenta has persistently worked on for the past 8 years.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, highly appreciated the active interest and enthusiastic support and responsibility of Syngenta Company when implementing the initiative to organize the Tree Planting Festival. in Can Tho City and the Clean Environment - Green Life Program. The event is fully expressed, meaning we must be aware and take specific actions to make the environment cleaner and greener.
2023 is also the 50th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly, choosing June 5 every year as World Environment Day to remind people of the importance of protecting the environment and building a better earth - where people and nature can live in harmony and develop sustainably. Over 50 years of existence, World Environment Day has become an important international event, attracting the participation of more than 150 countries around the globe.
Since 2015, Syngenta Vietnam has introduced the program "Clean Environment - Green Life" to increase training and raise awareness among farmers about environmental protection and the use of pesticides safely, effectively, and responsibly. Up to now, the unit has organized training on the safe and effective use of pesticides for more than 30,000 farmers. More than 100 tons of drug packaging have been collected and destroyed. The campaign has been launched in 15 provinces and cities across the country, thereby helping farmers to use pesticides in compliance with the principle of "4 rights" to manage pests effectively but still ensure safety for health, products that meet food safety and hygiene standards for export.
Mr. Tran Thanh Vu, General Director of Syngenta Vietnam, said that the organization of a day for a clean environment and a green life to collect used pesticide packaging and exchange gifts for daily consumption items to help raise people's awareness about environmental protection. The number of tens of tons collected is minimal compared to the amount still scattered in the field and has not been collected yet. However, through this activity, Syngenta Vietnam wishes to contribute to raising farmers' awareness of using pesticides for farming, crop protection, and being responsible for the environment, creating a clean environment to make the countryside livable.
According to Mr. Le Van Thiet, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), each year Vietnam imports from 80,000-100,000 tons of pesticides to serve agricultural production, with the amount of packaging accounting for about 10%. i.e., from about over 8,000 tons. If there is no solution to collect and dispose of indiscriminately in the field after use, it will cause severe environmental pollution.
From 2013 until now, the Plant Protection Department has cooperated with agro-pharmaceutical production and trading companies to implement the environmental protection program, collecting pesticide packaging. They have been built for concentration, and the functional sector will collect and destroy them twice a year. Syngenta organizes this effective program to raise environmental protection awareness and create a fresh, green, clean, and beautiful living environment.
Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc He suggested that all levels of government and mass organizations promote extensive propaganda to many people about the purpose and meaning of the tree planting festival and environmental sanitation, garbage collection, and treatment activities. Especially in terms of the role, significant effects, comprehensive and long-term benefits, and human values of planting trees, environmental protection, garbage collection, and treatment activities. Everyone joins hands to build Can Tho city with comprehensive development, green - clean - beautiful environment, becoming an ecological, civilized, and modern city imbued with the cultural identity of rivers in the Mekong Delta.
