The report focuses on five interconnected areas: food systems, circular economy, climate, nature, and social sustainability.

The report shows that the company has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 20% across the entire value chain and by 47% in its own operations since 2019.

This progress brings the company closer to its goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in its operations by 2030, while also supporting its long-term ambition of collaborating with suppliers, customers, and stakeholders to reach net-zero emissions across the entire value chain by 2050.

Another significant milestone is the company's launch of aseptic cartons with a paper-based barrier, which reduces carbon emissions by 33% and brings the company closer to developing the world's most sustainable food packaging.

This groundbreaking achievement is the result of a EUR 100 million investment in packaging research and development in 2023, with plans for similar annual investments over the next 5-10 years.

Mr. Adolfo Orive, President and CEO of Tetra Pak, remarked: “Collaboration within the food industry is increasingly crucial to provide sustainable food as the global population continues to grow.

Our global presence and comprehensive solutions offer opportunities to collaborate with stakeholders across the entire value chain, from farmers and food producers to suppliers, policymakers, consumers, and many others.

We understand the responsibility that comes with this role and are committed to continuing to contribute to transforming the world's food system towards greater safety, resilience, and sustainability”.

Tetra Pak's 2023 Sustainability Report also highlights the company's achievements over the past year and its ongoing initiatives to protect food, people, and the planet. These achievements include:

- Expanding the School Milk Program: The company has supported 64 million children in 49 countries to access milk and other nutritious beverages through the School Milk Program.

- Accelerating Recycling: The number of food cartons collected and sent for recycling globally increased by 7% compared to 2022. Additionally, the volume of recycled polyAl increased by 14%.

- Once again, the company has been recognized for its leadership in transparency and corporate performance: Tetra Pak has been listed by CDP Forests for eight consecutive years.

Additionally, the company received a rating in the water security sector, despite it being the first year reporting in this field.

- Actively implementing the United Nations Guiding Principles on business and human rights.

In Vietnam, Tetra Pak has launched numerous long-term initiatives to contribute to the circular economy.

Specifically, the company has expanded the School Recycling Program to Bac Ninh and Binh Duong provinces, raising awareness about sorting and collecting used cartons for recycling among millions of students in nearly 1,200 schools.

Additionally, the company continues to support customers in complying with regulations related to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), strengthening cooperation with recyclers like Dong Tien to enhance carton recycling capacity in Vietnam. Along with customers and partners, they continuously expand the network of carton collection points, currently numbering nearly 150 public collection points.

In 2023, nearly 1,400 tons of used beverage cartons, equivalent to about 139 million cartons, were collected and recycled by the company’s partners.

Recently, the company announced a EUR 97 million investment to further expand its factory in Binh Duong, implementing commitments to environmental protection and corporate governance, and maintaining sustainability standards throughout its business operations.

“We are actively implementing activities to accompany Vietnam in transitioning to a circular economy.

In 2023, we collaborated with Van Diem and Biopa to pioneer the collection and recycling of paper cartons in the North, with 40 tons of paper cartons collected and recycled. In 2024, we aim to reach 500 tons of paper cartons collected and recycled through this partnership.

Additionally, we have established 20 fixed collection points at the milk stores of Tetra Pak customers and plan to double the number of paper cartons collected there, reaching 4 tons/year.

We will also continue to maintain carton collection week activities at Aeon Mall and MM Mega Market supermarkets to enhance awareness and habits of collecting and sorting paper cartons in the community,” said Luong Thanh Thu, Head of Sustainability at Tetra Pak Vietnam.

“We are committed to continuing sustainable development efforts in Vietnam as a testament to 30 years of creating positive stories here,” Luong Thanh Thu emphasized.
