Over the years, experts, research units, as well as Vietnamese shrimp farmers are “wracking their brains” trying to find effective solutions to stop this disease.
Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) also goes by the name Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND). The causative agent is some variants of Vibrio bacteria carrying PirA and PirB genes, capable of producing toxins that disrupt the normal structure of the hepatopancreas, leading to necrosis.
Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS), or Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND), has been causing severe damage to shrimp farmers and the seafood industry not only in Vietnam but also in many countries in the region.
EMS-infected shrimp have pale hepatopancreas, marked atrophy, and intestines appear to be fragmented or empty. Another telltale sign is that the shell is usually soft. Sometimes black spots or streaks can be seen inside the hepatopancreas.
In normal cases EMS can break out within 10 to 45 days from the time the post larvae enter the ponds, progressing with extreme haste and causing particularly high mortality (up to 80-90% within 3-5 days after signs of disease appear).
In EMS-infected whiteleg shrimp, the color of the hepatopancreas seems more pale compared to the normal healthy shrimp.
EMS always seems haunting in the first month of stocking shrimp seed, even for senior shrimp farmers in Bac Lieu. On the occurrence this disease appears in the pond, it is almost inevitable to lose everything, and the crop is likely to be discarded. Hope for an effective solution now becomes more desperate than ever.
According to leading experts on shrimp farming, prevention of EMS needs to be done early and regularly. Current solutions include a combination of the following measures:
The first is to use disease-free seeds and improve pond conditions thoroughly to eliminate risk factors right from the start.
Next, the environmental conditions of the pond need to be well-managed since prolonged heat, high temperature and increased salinity in pond are favorable conditions for EMS to break out.
Lastly, a suitable diet is essential to help improve hepatopancreas health and increase shrimp’s resistance in the first month, which is the time when the risk of EMS infection is at its highest.
In order to accompany Vietnamese shrimp farmers in solving this difficult problem of EMS, Grobest Vietnam has made great efforts in researching and coming up with new initiatives to effectively prevent this dangerous syndrome.
On the upcoming February 21, 2022, Grobest will officially launch a new functional food product with an exclusive formula and additives to help activate immunity and prevent the risks of EMS in shrimp.
Products from Grobest - a leading expert in seafood nutrition - have gained the trust of Vietnamese shrimp farmers for more than 20 years.
Sharing about this new product, a representative of Grobest Vietnam said, “This is considered a pioneer shrimp feed line in the market, acting as a "direct shield" for shrimp against EMS. The product is researched and developed by Grobest's experts, promising to help shrimp farmers ease their worries in the face of erratic developments in the new crop and promote healthy shrimp farming.”
Established in 1974 in Taiwan - the "cradle" of the world aquaculture industry, with more than two decades of accompanying Vietnamese shrimp farmers, Grobest has always maintained its leading position in research and development of highly effective functional feed products of natural origin, without antibiotics, aiming towards sustainable and environmental-friendly farming.
Notable products include the Super Shied functional food line. Super Shield consists of perfect nutrition, rich amino acids and peptides, and a combination of effective additives that improve and enhance micronutrients in microbial molecules. This product boosts the self-repair function of cells, promotes a favorable metabolism and helps shrimp absorb quickly, thus enhancing hepatopancreas health and increasing shrimp’s resistance.
Super Shied quickly becomes one of the familiar solutions for domestic shrimp farmers thanks to its trait of effectively helping to prevent and stop potential diseases in shrimp.
Other product lines such as Vannamei or Gold Shield are also highly appreciated by shrimp farmers for their quality as they can ensure comprehensive health for shrimp.
