According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), statistics from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) showed that in 2021, the US has sharply increased its shrimp imports, with over 897 thousand tons, worth over USD 8 billion, increased by 20% and 24% respectively compared to 2020.
In which, the US imported from Vietnam more than 88 thousand tons of shrimps, valued at over USD 969 million, up 33% in quantity and 39% in value compared to 2020.
During the past year, the average price of shrimp imported into the US increased by 4% and reached over USD 8.9/kg. In general, the average price of imported shrimp from main sources has increased.
Ecuadorian shrimp imported to the US saw the biggest increase in average price, up 19% from USD 6.26 to USD 7.43/kg.
The price of Vietnamese shrimps imported into the US increased by 4% from USD 10.5 to USD 11/kg (the averaging price). Thus, the imported Vietnamese shrimp’s price is much higher than the average imported shrimp’s price in the US. The average price of other suppliers such as India, Thailand, Indonesia increased by 1%.
