On March 14, working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Mrs. Ho Thi Nguyen Thao - Vice Chairwoman of Phu Yen Provincial People's Committee - said that currently, the province is focusing on building a Geopark project Phu Yen is aiming for the title of UNESCO Global Geopark.
According to Mrs. Thao, the area expected to establish this park is located in 7/9 districts, towns, and cities of the province, including Tuy Hoa City, Dong Hoa Town, Song Cau Town, and some districts such as Tuy An, Son Hoa, Phu Hoa, and Tay Hoa. The focus is on the Da Dia Reef.
Through surveys, Phu Yen province has 60 geological heritages belonging to 9 types. The geological heritage value in Phu Yen is the scientific basis for building Phu Yen Geopark and beyond.
Phu Yen Geopark will include three central scientific values: geological heritage value, historical cultural heritage value, and biodiversity value.
Mrs. Thao affirmed that through surveys and organizing many preliminary conferences and seminars, she assessed that Phu Yen could meet the global Geopark criteria.
The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) recently accepted the national-level independent project "Research and Assessment of the Value of Geological Heritage and Other Heritage as a scientific basis for establishing the Industrial Park UNESCO Global Geological Park in Phu Yen province."
This is the scientific basis for Phu Yen province to establish a Geopark and prepare a dossier to submit to UNESCO for recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
"Request the MONRE to create conditions to form Phu Yen Geopark towards the title of UNESCO Global Geopark and, simultaneously, support the province in completing the application for recognition as a Geopark level. Country and participate in activities of the global Geopark network," - Mrs. Thao said.
Responding to the above recommendation, the Minister of MONRE, Mr. Dang Quoc Khanh, said that creating a Geopark must preserve and develop the environmental landscape while protecting biodiversity.
According to Mr. Khanh, the UNESCO Global Geopark will be the leading tourism product, a distinct highlight in Phu Yen's tourism products. The MONRE is ready to support and create conditions for the province to form a Global Geopark soon.
