Luc Ngan lychee, grown in the northern province of Bac Giang, becomes the first Vietnamese product receiving GI certification in Japan.
Earlier, Luc Ngan lytchee successfully protected its trademark in China, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Australia, Laos, and Cambodia and has been consumed in other countries globally.
Japan is one of the toughest markets in the world with strict food safety and hygiene standards. The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has granted geographical indication (GI) certification to Luc Ngan lychee.
The issuance of the certification will help the lychee in Luc Ngan district widen exports to other countries.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Giang province, about 200 tons Vietnamese fresh lychees were exported to Japan in 2020.
The Geographical Indication (GI) Act entered into force in Japan in June, 2015. The GI Act provides a system that the government protects names of such products as Intellectual Property.
The GI Act protects the interests of producers through the establishment of GI protection system, thereby contributing to the sound development of the agricultural, forestry and fishery industries and also to ensure the interests of consumers.
