Classifying green projects helps businesses access green credit

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Le Cong Thanh stated that green transformation is not only a global trend but also an urgent requirement in the context of increasing socio-economic development pressures on the environment and the escalating severity of climate change.

The 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam has identified green transformation and digital transformation as the two most crucial transitions for Vietnam to become a high-income, strong, prosperous, and happy developed nation by 2045.

The efforts of the Government, ministries, and local authorities in recent times have demonstrated that Vietnam recognizes green growth as a key objective and strategic direction for socio-economic development in the coming period.

According to Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh, the green credit market has been growing at a significantly higher rate than overall credit growth in the economy. Several issuers have piloted the issuance of local government green bonds and corporate green bonds. Notably, bonds have been issued for large-scale green projects, such as renewable energy, wind power, and solar power.

Recently, many businesses and corporations have adopted green business models as a core strategy and competitive advantage. Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has submitted a draft Prime Ministerial Decision on environmental criteria and certification for investment projects eligible for green credit and green bond issuance. This draft decision establishes a legal framework for evaluating and supporting projects that provide environmental benefits. The regulation will apply to project investors, green bond issuers, credit institutions, and other relevant stakeholders.

Currently, the Party and the State are strongly promoting policies on circular economy, green transformation, and digital transformation as essential elements for Vietnam’s sustainable development and deeper global integration. Strengthening mechanisms, policies, investment, and resources for green transformation continues to be a key focus.

Green transformation is a shared responsibility

According to Nguyen Duc Thanh, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Labor Newspaper, Vietnam is facing severe environmental challenges, ranking among the top 10 Asian countries with the highest air pollution index. Transitioning to a green economy not only helps mitigate negative environmental impacts but also serves as a driving force for emerging industries such as renewable energy and clean technology, creating job opportunities and promoting sustainable development.

The launch ceremony "Green Transformation - Joining hands for a sustainable Vietnam" marks an important first step in a series of events aimed at raising public awareness about the role and significance of a green and sustainable economy. It seeks to encourage collective action from the community in supporting the Government’s Net Zero commitment, ensuring energy security, and improving public health.

According to Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh, green transformation is not the responsibility of any single entity but a shared duty of the entire society. The Green Transformation Day 2025 event series will further clarify expert insights, business contributions, and public engagement in addressing key bottlenecks in the green transition process.

Stakeholders will work together to create a favorable environment for businesses to invest in green industries while encouraging public participation in environmental protection efforts, aiming for the future of Vietnam and the well-being of every citizen. The goal is to make green transformation a new economic driver, helping Vietnam achieve an economic growth rate of over 8% in 2025 and double-digit growth in the following years, as outlined by the Party and Government.

Representing the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment, Deputy Director Nguyen Dinh Hoa affirmed that as the capital of the country, Hanoi will take the lead with concrete actions to achieve the Net Zero goal, ensure energy security, improve public health, and promote sustainable development.

At the event, delegates including Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor Nguyen Xuan Hung, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Le Cong Thanh, Editor-in-Chief of Lao Dong Newspaper Nguyen Ngoc Hien, along with representatives from the Ministry of Construction, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment, and Vingroup Corporation, jointly performed the ceremony of pressing the green commitment button - Green Pledge. This symbolic act represents the participation of various stakeholders in driving green transformation in Vietnam.

Beyond the launch ceremony, from March to May 2025, a series of events will include panel discussions and seminars on key topics such as green credit and bonds, renewable energy transition, green transportation, and green exports. Experts, policymakers, and businesses will share insights and recommendations to address policy barriers and accelerate Vietnam's green transformation.
