Japan is reducing the import of Indian cashew nuts and increasing the purchase of Vietnamese cashew nuts. Photo: TL.
According to the International Trade Center (ITC), in the first five months of 2021, Japan's cashew imports has reached USD 33.17 million, down 11.2% in comparison with the same period in 2020. To be more specific, Japan sharply reduced the import of cashew nuts from India, which resulted in a decrease of 22.8%, reaching USD 19.14 million.
On the other hand, Japan increased its imports of cashew nuts from Vietnam with an increase of 4.5%, reaching USD 12.92 million. Vietnam's cashew nut market share in the total import value of Japan accounted for 38.97% in the first five months of 2021, higher than the 33.09% rate in the first five months of 2020. Thus, it can be seen that Japanese consumers tend to gradually switch from consuming Indian cashews to Vietnamese cashews.
In 2020, Vietnam exported 6,517 tons of cashew nuts to Japan, valued at USD 42.5 million, an increase of 83% in volume and 64.55% in value compared to 2019.
