Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang held talks with Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive John Lee at the Government Office on August 1. Chief Executive John Lee is currently conducting an official visit to Vietnam from July 31 to August 2.
The Deputy Prime Minister congratulated Hong Kong on its significant achievements under the leadership of the Special Administrative Region government, with support from the government of China, which has helped Hong Kong strengthen its status as a leading economic, financial, trade, scientific, and technological hub regionally and globally.
He affirmed that the Government of Vietnam will consistently support and encourage ministries, sectors, and local governments to strengthen and broaden friendly exchanges and comprehensive cooperation with Hong Kong.
Chief Executive John Lee emphasized that the government of Hong Kong highly values mutually beneficial cooperation with Vietnam. Furthermore, Hong Kong aims to promote comprehensive and effective collaboration across various fields, thereby bringing tangible benefits to the people and business communities of both Hong Kong and Vietnam.
Vietnam is currently Hong Kong’s second-largest trading partner in ASEAN and the seventh-largest trading partner globally. Conversely, Hong Kong is Vietnam’s seventh-largest trading partner and fifth-largest investor.
Both parties agreed to continue exploring and effectively utilizing their opportunities, potentials, and advantages, expanding cooperation, and achieving mutual benefits and development.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang suggested Vietnam and Hong Kong to enhance delegation exchanges, and promote cooperation in key fields including economy and trade, investment, finance, tourism, culture, education, science and technology, law enforcement, and citizen protection.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang welcomed Hong Kong's active involvement in the Vietnamese market, which includes the implementation of high-quality investment projects and increased import of Vietnamese goods.
He requested the government of Hong Kong to continue facilitating a stable environment for the Vietnamese community in Hong Kong, increase scholarships for Vietnamese students, and collaborate in preventing legal violations.
The Deputy Prime Minister also proposed enhancing cooperation in multilateral mechanisms and forums, notably with Hong Kong’s support and close coordination during Vietnam’s hosting of APEC 2027.
In agreement with Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang's remarks, Chief Executive John Lee suggested both countries to maintain high-level exchanges. He also welcomed Vietnam's participation in the 9th Belt and Road Summit to be held in Hong Kong; and requested Vietnam to facilitate Hong Kong businesses in expanding investment cooperation.
Chief Executive John Lee also proposed strengthening exchanges in financial, trade, transport service investment, digital economy, green economy, and science and technology; utilizing Hong Kong's role as a "super connector" to enhance the effectiveness of economic cooperation between the two regions.
The Chief Executive expressed a wish for Vietnam and Hong Kong to further promote people-to-people exchanges, tourism, education, and training, and make preparations to advance cooperation in multilateral forums.
