High-tech shrimp farming - application of digital transformation

(VAN) HCM City’s Agricultural Extension Center is supporting farmers in Can Gio and Nha Be Districts to digitally transform in high-tech shrimp farming to help monitor the environment and manage diseases.

Nguyen Hoai Nam, who lives in Tam Thon Hiep Commune, currently raises shrimp with an area of 7,500 m2 of water surface. He applies a closed water circulation process, using a fan system, creating bottom oxygen with the farming density from 200 to 250 shrimps per square meter.

After 80 days of farming, about 40 shrimps will get 1kg, yielding 5.5 tons per 1,000 m2 of pond. On average, Nam gains over 50 tons per ha per crop.

Nam said his family's shrimp pond applies digital technology, using a controller to provide shrimp food to ensure sufficient food. He also uses environmental monitoring equipment to regularly monitor to ensure the best living environment for shrimp.

Thanks to the application of science and technology to control from pond making, farming techniques, feeding methods to water environment management, after seven seasons, Nam’s family has earned several billion đồng.

Meanwhile, Dinh Quang Thanh, owner of a shrimp pond in Ly Nhon Commune, Can Gio District said: “Since applying digital technology to the shrimp pond system’s run, it has helped me control the water environment in the pond very well.

“First, I have to download applications to my smartphone to connect to the control boxes to detect and promptly handle problems in the pond.

“Via the applications on the smartphone, I can also manage food, medicine and make a diary, storing data about the shrimp pond. Earlier, when I didn't use the applications on my phone, I had to go directly to the shrimp pond to turn on and off the machines, or manually measure the water, but now thanks to digital technology, all I need to do is monitor. It is very convenient to use the phone to manage the shrimp pond”.

Duyen Hai Aquaculture and Service Cooperative in Ly Nhon Commune has also recently implemented a high-tech whiteleg shrimp farming model. Especially, it has applied digital transformation in the entire system of automatic shrimp feeding machines, two-stage shrimp farming and application of microbiological solutions in shrimp farming. These solutions save labour and food as well as make the pond environment less polluted, increase resistance so shrimps will achieve high productivity.

Applying the new method has helped the cooperative improve product quality, shrimp production is doubled compared to the traditional farming method. This is also a shrimp farming area that has been certified with VietGAP and is participating in the food safety and hygiene chain of HCM City.

Tran Duy Phong, CEO of Tepbac Company Limited shared about transferring digital technology applications to help farmers manage shrimp ponds. He said: “My company combined a remote monitoring and management platform with an automatic device system in the pond such as an environmental meter that automatically monitors continuously, a control cabinet connected to other devices in the pond which is controlled remotely via phone or computer. We have put the technology into production in a practical way to widely transfer it, making it easy for farmers to access and use”.

Le Minh Dung, Secretary of Can Gio District’s Party Committee said that in difficult production conditions increasingly, the district has deployed production models with high technology applications to improve productivity and ensure efficiency. It also promptly implements policies to support production to meet the needs and aspirations of farmers.

At present, in Can Gio District, the high-tech shrimp farming movement is developing quickly. Many households raising high-tech shrimp and applying digital technology to shrimp farming are mostly successful and profitable. Can Gio is gradually converting inefficient salt production to shrimp farming, replicating production models that combine advanced farming techniques. This is also the main task that the district is deploying to complete the economic restructuring.
