Growing sugarcane in Laos: An attractive opportunity for Vietnamese farmers

(VAN) A sugarcane business has just announced a program to attract farmers to Laos to grow sugarcane.
Large fields in Laos will help farmers optimize the cost of sugarcane cultivation.

Large fields in Laos will help farmers optimize the cost of sugarcane cultivation.

In the current period when the sugar industry is on the rebound, along with the lack of agricultural land to expand production, is this direction the solution for farmers to get rich?

Going abroad to own large fields

"Opening the way to agribusiness" is a program organized for Vietnamese farmers to come to Attapeu province (Laos) to cultivate sugarcane, launched by Thanh Thanh Cong - Bien Hoa Joint Stock Company (SBT). It means that every farmer is an entrepreneur, thinking and acting like a business owner, and the main field of activity is agriculture.

According to the content announced by SBT, the program "Opening the way to agribusiness" will create conditions for farmers to take over and invest in sugarcane cultivation in large fields with an area of up to 100 hectares.

This is the first time a Vietnamese enterprise has implemented this breakthrough model. The company will arrange for farmers participating in the program to allocate land without paying rent, and at the same time, enjoy a capital investment package to plant and take care of sugarcane during the growing season. At the crop end, the company will cover the entire sugarcane output and divide the profits to ensure that farmers fully get the results of their efforts.

In addition, to help farmers cultivate high productivity, SBT also appoints a team of agricultural experts and agronomists to advise and guide modern farming techniques.

For large-scale farm management, the company also has the policy to support management and operation costs for farmers. These actions aim to ensure that farmers effectively exploit the allocated land area, increasing their income at the crop end.

And with the ultimate goal of creating a source of raw cane for sugar mills, SBT will not collect any fees when farmers register to participate. Participants will receive detailed advice, then sign an official contract and ensure their rights under the law.

Farmers will have adequate facilities when they come to Laos to grow sugarcane.

Opportunity for whom?

With a climate similar to that of Vietnam, a new environment, and friendly locals, the land of Laos has all the criteria for Vietnamese farmers, especially young people, to have the aspiration to own and manage large-scale agriculture farms to start a business.

Owning a factory with a capacity of 7,000 tonnes of sugarcane per day and a raw material area of nearly 11,000 hectares, and is expected to expand to 15,000-20,000 hectares, SBT has experience cultivating and producing sugar cane in Attapeu province, Laos over the years. Therefore, the company is very confident to invite farmers who grew sugarcane or have the agricultural experience to join the program.

After the Asian Trade In Goods Agreement (ATIGA) officially took effect, many sugar mills must close. As a result, thousands of sugarcane farmers had to switch crops or find other livelihoods. Therefore, SBT's program can be seen as an opportunity for these farmers to take advantage of their knowledge and experience to continue farming but at a higher level.

With a large land area in Laos, farmers will have conditions to mechanize and optimize costs. Even if it has the capacity, the company is willing to allocate hundreds of hectares more for farmers to take advantage of the scale. This is something that in Vietnam is almost impossible to do.

Besides, 2021 is also a year for the sugar industry when moving from recession to recovery. Sugarcane price is expected to grow strongly in the next three years. If taking advantage of this opportunity, farmers can earn up to VND 3 billion per year.

Currently, many farmers in the Central - Central Highlands region have gone to Laos to participate in the program with a total area of up to 3,000 hectares of sugarcane cultivation. Farmers in the localities that used to be "the largest sugarcane farming places" such as the Southeast and Southwest regions can also consider this program. Although knowing that "going abroad" is an important decision, if there is determination and support from the company, this can be an opportunity to change your life and get rich with sugarcane.
