Good tips for disease prevention and control: Stand on the giant's shoulders

(VAN) Dare to think and dare to do, Mr. Chien invested in a modern cold barn system for the oursourcing farming of more than 2,000 pigs/litter for C.P. Vietnam Corporation.

Previously, Mr. Huynh Van Chien in Dong Khoi commune (Chau Thanh district, Tay Ninh) only raised pigs on a small, fragmented scale and was always affected by disease attacks and unstable prices. There was a time when Mr. Chien had to "hang the barn," work as a transporter, and do many other jobs because he thought he was not suitable for pig farming.

A few years ago, Mr. Chien worked as a hired laborer for an outsourcing pig farm in Tan Bien district. Here, Mr. Chien learned many techniques about disease safety, closed livestock farming processes, and especially not worrying about many stages of product production.

Realizing the potential to "stand on the giant's shoulders," Mr. Chien discussed with his wife and children selling land to invest in an outsourcing pig farm system for C.P. Vietnam Corporation. Mr. Chien raises about 2,000 pigs/litter. After deducting all expenses, he still earns a profit of about VND 800 million.

Since switching to the outsourcing pig farm model, the thing that makes Mr. Chien feel most secure is the issue of disease safety. The pig herd is always healthy and isolated from the source of disease. Despite experiencing many outbreaks of African swine fever and blue-ear pig diseases, Mr. Chien's pig herd is still healthy and sold regularly thanks to his thoroughness.

"It must be said that this closed model ensures that there will be no headaches with the problem of diseases. Any worker taking care of pigs must go through 4-5 steps of sterilization of the whole person. No steps are allowed to be skipped in order for the pig herd to be healthy," shared Mr. Chien.

Currently, Mr. Chien's farm is raising pigs for C.P. Vietnam. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Truong, Director of C.P. Vietnam Corporation, Tay Ninh Branch, breeds, feed, farming process, and output are all guaranteed by the company. People linking with the company only need to invest in the farm system and livestock farming according to the procedures and standards as committed.

Regarding disease safety, in addition to being guided in designing a risk control system right from the beginning, farm owners are accompanied by veterinarians throughout the process of raising each litter.

"Any health problems of the pig herd are directly intervened by our veterinary staff. In addition, disease control is always controlled in many layers to eliminate disease sources. Thanks to that, with this process, the risk of disease transmission is almost very low," shared Mr. Truong.

Tay Ninh's livestock structure is continuing to shift from small-scale livestock farming to concentrated farm-scale livestock farming, ensuring biosafety. Currently, in Tay Ninh province, there are 127 concentrated pig farms with a total herd of over 375,000 heads.

Along with that, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also encourages livestock households and businesses to increase the application of high technology in pig farming in particular. This not only helps breeders control the livestock herd's health, improve productivity, reduce costs, but also ensure disease-free areas.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Xuan, Director of the Tay Ninh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that thanks to people's transformation of livestock farming models and the focus on biosafety methods, Tay Ninh is moving more firmly and exporting faster.

"Tay Ninh focuses on building disease-free zones, and controlling disease risks has become a key issue. Household livestock farming is also very good to ensure people's livelihood, but it has many potential risks. Therefore, changing thinking, linking, and closed production not only helps livestock farming reduce risks but also be more sustainable," Mr. Xuan assessed.

Tay Ninh is currently managing 81 VietGAHP-certified livestock facilities, one disease-free zone in Duong Minh Chau district, and six commune-level facilities in Go Dau district certified as safe from avian influenza and Newcastle disease. The province also has 71 other certified disease-free livestock facilities. Besides, Tan Chau district was officially recognized by the Department of Animal Health as a disease-free zone.
