According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), for 11 months of 2021, fishcakes and surimi export reached $381 million, increasing 28% over the same session last year.

Thus, this is one of the seafood products with a high growth rate this year.

Due to a sharp growth, the proportion of fishcakes and surimi has improved noticeably regarding the total export value of Vietnam’s seafood products, accounting for 4.8% in turnover over 11 months of 2021, an increase in comparison with the 3.9% of the same session of 2021.

The Covid-19 pandemic is considered a factor motivating demand for purchasing fishcakes and surimi in markets.

Vietnam exports fishcakes and surimi to about 40 markets all over the world. In which, the 3 largest markets are South Korea, Thailand and China, accounting for 23%, 21% and 13% of total export value, respectively.

Over 11 months of 2021, while export of fishcakes and surimi to both South Korea and China increased slightly by 6% and 7%, export to Thailand increased sharply by up to 39%.

The next three following markets include Japan, Russia and Malaysia, accounting for 9.5%,7.5% and 7% of the total export value of Vietnam’s fishcakes and surimi, respectively. At the end of November, exports to these three markets all increased sharply: export to Japan increased 26%, export to Russia increased 68% and export to Malaysia increased 52%.

Additionally, fishcakes and surimi export to some markets showed unexpected growth, export to Belarus increased twelvefold, export to the US increased 172%, and exports to Lithuania increased 111%.

Fishcakes and surimi products from Vietnam are mainly produced from sea fishes, including Nemipterus japonicus, Saurida umeyoshii, and other types of rough fish and bucket fishes.
