Exports of Vietnamese meat product is growing rapidly

(VAN) Despite a steep decline in the export of various Vietnamese agricultural products as a result of global inflation, the export of meat products is growing rapidly.

According to the General Department of Customs, exports of Vietnamese meat and meat product reached 1,500 tons in April 2023. This export volume is worth USD 8.6 million, which is a 45% increase in volume and 112% increase in value over April 2022.

During the first four months of 2023, Vietnam exported 7,300 tons of meat and meat products for a turnover of USD 34 million, which is a 65% increase in volume and 88% increase in value over the same period in 2022. The primary target markets for Vietnamese meat and meat products include Hong Kong, China, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Belgium.

Hong Kong remains the largest market for Vietnam's livestock industry. Exports of Vietnamese meat and meat product to Hong Kong reached 604 tons in April 2023, accounting for 40% of Vietnam's total meat exports. This export volume is worth USD 3.8 million, which is a 76% increase in volume and 150% increase in value compared to April 2022.

During the first four months of 2023, Vietnam exported 3,17 thousand tons of meat and meat products to Hong Kong market for a turnover of USD 20 million, which is a 79% increase in volume and 110% increase in value over the same period in 2022. Exports of Vietnamese meat and meat product to Hong Kong primarily included frozen whole suckling pigs, frozen whole pork, etc.

In the first four months of 2023, the majority of the meat and meat products exported from Vietnam fell into the following categories: fresh, chilled, or frozen pork; meat and edible poultry offal. On the other hand, the majority of exported products include fresh, chilled or frozen meat and edible offal of other slaughtered animals.

Accordingly, fresh, chilled or frozen pork were the most exported products at 3,700 tons and USD 22 million ; which is a 68% increase in volume and 95% increase in value over the same period in 2022. Fresh chilled or frozen pigs are exported to the markets of Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Laos.

During the first 4 months of 2023, the export of meat and edible poultry offal increased significantly, reaching 2,350 tons and USD 6.4 million; which is a 521% increase in volume and 1,316% increase in value over the same period in 2022. Vietnamese poultry products are mainly exported to the markets of China, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and so on.

Vietnam's exports of meat and meat product have seen a significant growth in the last few years. As a result, major businesses in the livestock industry such as CP Vietnam, Japfa Vietnam, De Heus, etc. are promoting investment in large livestock projects in combination with construction of disease-free zones and facilities to serve export.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development organized a Conference to deploy and build disease-free livestock production chains and zones in Tay Ninh province in May 2023. Within the framework of this Conference, leaders of local Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Southern Key Economic Zone, and De Heus Co., Ltd. have signed a cooperation agreement to build a disease-free and food-safe chicken production chain for export between 2023 and 2028.

The agreement sets out the goal of building a chicken production facilities chain and disease-free poultry production zones in accordance with regulations by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH/OIE). The agreement focuses on preventing diseases such as avian influenza, Newcastle, Salmonella to ensure sustainable livestock development, improved product value, safe products for domestic consumption as well as meet international demand for the export of poultry products.

Tay Ninh province's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that the poultry value chain of Hung Nhon - De Heus - Bel Ga recently constructed a poultry hatchery in Trang Bang. The building was put into operation in April, 2021 with designed capacity of over 19 million chicks annually.

A poultry slaughtering project with a slaughtering capacity of 52 million heads per year, and a food processing project with a capacity of 132,000 tons per year were deployed in Phuoc Binh commune, Trang Bang town on an area of 17.9 hectares. These projects are currently in the process of finalizing land-related procedures. DHN Tay Ninh high-tech application breeding project in Tan Chau district, with an area of 39.5 hectares, was granted an investment certificate on July 19, 2022.
