Eco-friendly rice farming adapts to climate change

(VAN) An eco-friendly rice farming project has been implemented in Kien Giang for 24 months in Hon Dat and Giong Rieng districts.

The project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to apply eco-friendly rice farming" is coordinated by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union and the Organization for Advocacy for Regional Solutions for the Community and Ecosystem(Building Resilience Against Climate Effects - 'BRACE Fund') build and deploy.

The Farmers' Union in Kien Giang province has developed the project's operation plan and implemented the model in 4 communes: Thanh Binh, Thanh Phuoc (Giong Rieng district), My Phuoc, and Linh Huynh (Hon Dat district). The project implementation period is 24 months, with four consecutive rice crops, from the 2021-2022 winter-spring crop to the 2023 summer-autumn crop. The total cost estimated is nearly VND 983 million.

Mrs. Phan Kim Loan, Acting Director of the Center for Farmer Support and Vocational Education (the Farmers' Union of Kien Giang Province), said that in implementing the project, the unit organized training courses for 80 farmers in four communes mentioned above.

At the training session, farmers were imparted by the project trainers with an overview of the eco-friendly improved rice farming methods (SRI). In particular, focusing on three main techniques: reducing chemical fertilizers, alternating wet and dry irrigation, treating rice straw with microorganisms; Improving rice farming techniques for farmers and technicians to create safe commercial rice; Improving commodity value, and protecting human health.

Also, raise awareness among farmers, consumers, and stakeholders about the benefits of eco-friendly rice farming methods, contributing to modern and sustainable agriculture, and adapting to climate change.
