Originating from the creative initiative of the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front in Dong Thap Province, in 2020, the province launched a movement aimed at encouraging farmers to strive towards becoming "Professional farmers". This initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing the skills and capabilities of farmers, with the ultimate goal of linking agricultural production to the sustainable development of the local economy.
The model was initially implemented as a pilot project in 5 districts, with each district selecting one commune to serve as a demonstration site. In these selected areas, farmers received comprehensive support to improve their production skills and knowledge. They were trained in management techniques, learning how to become more self-sufficient and capable of managing both their economic activities and community life independently. Additionally, farmers had the opportunity to visit from successful production models and learn to adopt more efficient and innovative methods in their own agricultural practices.
By August 2023, the Standing Committee of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee had officially transferred the "Professional farmer" model to the Dong Thap Provincial Farmers' Association, transforming it into a large-scale movement that spans the entire province. This shift marked a significant milestone in the province’s agricultural development efforts. The model, now widely adopted, has created a powerful ripple effect, attracting the participation of thousands of farmer members and playing a crucial role in changing the mindset of local farmers. It has successfully shifted the focus from traditional agricultural practices to a modern, more sustainable agricultural economy.
Mr. Ly Van Giau, Chairman of the Dong Thap Provincial Farmers' Association, highlighted that the "Professional farmer" model has had far-reaching benefits. Not only has it contributed to a change in awareness, but it has also yielded tangible, positive results for the province. As of now, more than 121.000 farmer members across Dong Thap have registered for participation in the model, with over 42.000 of them officially recognized as "professional farmers".
"This model serves as a prime example of innovation and effectiveness in the creation of a modern and sustainable agricultural economy", Mr. Giau noted. "It is a model that not only integrates technology but also prioritizes environmental protection".
In addition to this, the Dong Thap Provincial Farmers' Association has forged a number of partnerships with various government departments, agencies and businesses to implement a range of cooperative programs. These initiatives include training workshops aimed at helping farmers incorporate digital technologies into their farming practices, as well as broadening their knowledge in various aspects of modern agriculture. The training sessions are designed to be short, straightforward, memorable and easy to apply.
Notably, over 40.000 farmers have successfully installed the "Vietnamese farmers" app and 2.500 individuals are actively engaging in e-commerce through various online platforms, thanks to a collaboration with Felix Software Solutions Joint Stock Company. This initiative has enabled members, cooperatives, businesses and household entrepreneurs to establish trade connections with localities both within Vietnam and internationally. Furthermore, it provides them with the necessary tools and knowledge to manage online stores, list products and handle important aspects such as product delivery and payment processing.
In addition to these advancements, the various levels of the Farmers' Association in the province have been actively guiding farmers toward developing environmentally responsible, clean, and circular production models. One exemplary initiative is the recycling of organic waste and agricultural by-products for the production of biological products. This approach not only helps farmers save on costs and reduce environmental pollution, but it also significantly enhances the quality and market value of agricultural products due to their superior sustainability and environmental friendliness.
Mr. Ly Van Giau emphasized that the communication and awareness-raising efforts have been carried out through a variety of channels, including regular meetings at local branches, hands-on training sessions, and online seminars. He highlighted that farmers' clubs serve as "ideal" venues for the Dong Thap Farmers' Association to effectively spread important policy messages and encourage the adoption of modern agricultural technologies.
On the other hand, the Dong Thap Provincial Farmers' Association has established an official website, maintained active Zalo groups, and utilized communication channels managed by association staff to deliver information quickly and efficiently to local farmers. Additionally, through these channels, the association highlights successful role models in agricultural production, showcasing their achievements and innovative approaches. By sharing these success stories, the association aims to inspire and motivate farmers, encouraging them to enhance their knowledge, improve their skills, and adopt better methods for organizing and managing agricultural production.
