The Vietnam Coffee - Cocoa Association (VICOFA) conducted a Congress on December 28 to assess the activities of term IX (2017-2020) and to consider the direction of term X (2021-2024).
Over the last three decades since its formation, VICOFA has made significant contributions to increasing Vietnamese coffee's global export share to 18%. Faced with a number of obstacles, the organization continues to monitor worldwide movements as well as socio-economic issues affecting the coffee industry in order to provide timely policy recommendations to higher levels.
The association urged the government and relevant ministries, departments, and units to create favorable conditions for farmers and businesses to obtain loans at preferential interest rates for post-harvest investment, to adopt a more supportive policy approach, and to strengthen their connections to export markets. Additionally, it collaborated with the International Cooperation Department (MARD) on joint initiatives to negotiate amendments and supplements to the International Coffee Agreement (ICA) 2007, concentrating on problems pertaining to Vietnam's position and interests at the ICO.
In terms of production, VICOFA collaborated with MARD, the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology, and the WASI Institute to establish instruction processes, standards, and documentation aimed at increasing the added value and ensuring the long-term development of coffee. It collaborated with the Plant Protection Department in forming a team to monitor pesticide usage on coffee in the High Central provinces in order to eliminate the active component glyphosate on coffee and comply with EU safety regulations.
Throughout the association's IX term, it also aggressively organized domestic and international firms to invest in deep processing, grow roasted and instant coffee exports, and mobilize private enterprises and members to build the domestic coffee consumption network.
Deputy Minister of MARD Le Quoc Doanh praised VICOFA's collaboration with the ministry in undertaking several programs to promote sustainable coffee development during the congress. "Today's accomplishments in the Vietnamese coffee industry must be credited to the collaborative efforts of coffee producers, entrepreneurs, coffee production and processing firms, and the Association's leaders," Deputy Minister Le Quoc Doanh said.
To ensure the future sustainability of the coffee industry, Deputy Minister Le Quoc Doanh advised that the Association collaborate closely with MARD's key departments and municipalities to efficiently accomplish tasks centered on solutions:
Review and stabilize the scale of effective and sustainable coffee production in line with market demand, developing in a number of specialty coffee regions such as the Central Highlands and the Northwest; continue to invest in research on high yielding, high-quality, pest- and disease-resistant coffee varieties, serving coffee re-cultivation; implementation of a technical package for safe production development; encouraging businesses to invest in coffee production;
The Congress chose a 21-member Executive Board for the X term. Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, General Director of the Joint Stock Company for Coffee and Import-Export Inspection, was elected President of VICOFA for the X term (2021-2024).
Entering its tenth term, VICOFA is implementing a new era of coffee development with two primary objectives: To begin, Vietnam's position as the second biggest producer and exporter of green coffee must be maintained. gender. Second, expand instant roasted coffee exports and boost export revenue to USD 5-6 billion by 2030 under the slogan "productivity, quality, added value."
To accomplish the objectives, VICOFA will work in collaboration with MARD, the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development, to implement the Scheme for Certification of High-Quality Vietnamese Coffee Brands; continue to re-cultivate and test new varieties of coffee, tea, and cassava that are high yielding and drought-tolerant; and promote trade promotion in the field of processed coffee exports into the EVFTA, EUKFTA, and other countries with FTA.
