According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the General Administration of Customs of China (GAC) announced that China has suspended the import of seafood products from Ecuador's companies including Cofimar, Procesadora Y Exportadora De Mariscos and Exportadora Total Seafood. The import ban will last for six weeks.
GAC stated that the reason was that 8 samples from 5 frozen whiteleg shrimp batches of the mentioned companies were tested positive with the coronavirus.
Over the first 10 months of 2021, Proexpo exported 15,000 tons of shrimp, making it the 8th largest shrimp exporter in Ecuador. Cofimar and Exportadora are also among the top 10 Ecuadorian shrimp exporters.
Ecuador is the largest shrimp supplier for China. In 2021, China imported 379 thousand tons of shrimp from Ecuador, accounting for 62% of China's total shrimp imports.
